yeah, 25" over p&y is certainly a dink....

Hey, we all have our standards and expectations. P&Y is just one set of standards set to an arbitrary number. For elk, personally I view 300" as a good break point, whereas P&Y views that at 260". So there you go.

However, more and more I judge them more on the experience than their actual measurement. I have a 274" bull mounted just because of the experience (the one in my avatar). He was a brawler and gave me every indication of that before I shot him. And then when we caped him out, he had a big ole abscess on his forehead and you could see where he had beat the heck out of his head either fighting or with trees.

My biggest gripe is the freaking music in some videos and all the unnecessary talking trying to sound like a genius. Your in the mountains with a gun, we know your trying to kill something.
The toughest of the tough dont really brag about it, they will just grind your ass into the ground to see if you can keep up. On a scale of whimp to Kuiu commercial tough, I fall somewhere in the middle. I know a couple guys that could inflict more damage than a wolf pack, but you would never know because they're so humble and they hunt because they love it, not for fame and fortune.
This who has the biggest stick shit and who wants to be a mountain warrior gladiator junk is all a side effect of marketing. Images sell, just like all the rich kids in highschool who had to have American Eagle or Abercrombie and Fitch to be cool. Some people are insecure to the point where they need the status symbol to be cool and feel accepted.

Western hunting can be hard. But damn, some of these hunting videos want you to believe they are climbing Everest.... gets old.

Tell me about the hunt, not about how tough you are.
Yeah, for sure. It’s not always that hard, and doesn’t have to be. I think with our current trend, a person could build a strategy to hunt the critters all of the hard core guys walk by being hard core:LOL:

I agree, but playing Devil's advocate, calling a 170" buck a "dink" comes off a certain way too.... i may even say it's a form of bragging proclaiming a 170" buck is a dink. can't have it both ways.

i do know what you are saying, click titles are rampant, but that is just getting people to watch their video.... calling a big buck a dink is a different thing....

Yea it might come off that way to some folks but isn't this a thread about essentially making 30 min of "bragging video"?? Maybe some guys see it as making hunting "art"?? Or what I am getting at is if you are going to go that far to "brag" or "make art" at least hunt a solid buck! As I can get to 12k any day and if I am wanting to see "art" I will do in in a respectable manner or out in black rock city, Nevada - in a loincloth! Again to each their own..

I get it some places dont have trophy animals other guys dont want to or have the ability to put in the time to find em but again if I am watching tv style video I expect a certain level of performance.. When I watch hoops I dont want to see a high school jv game I want to watch a solid NCAA team or pro team play. If you are making a "hardcore" video about "mega bucks 3000 above 12,000'" I dont want to a jv level of play out there...

A lot of tongue and cheek in there so guys take it as such. My perspective also is formed from a peer group of real solid mule deer hunters that I am fortunate enough to call friends. Guys who have made the life choice to arrange their lives to hunt big deer. Hardcore is not just living in the high country for 6 days chasing deer or pounding weights/cardio east of the Mississippi somewhere.. I see it as choosing to live in a place and have lifestyle that allows you to put in 20+ days of scouting above 12k every year as that is what it takes...

Not to mention the time need to to hunt - more for some less for others or as embarrassing as it is it took me another 16 days of hunting to get my buck (bragging here over 200") this year... At that level of commitment/work you hit a spot where yea 170" becomes a dink only destine to be listed in the notes as a number to be referenced the next year if he returns. Again to each their own..

I know a ton of guys who leave the video camera at home and sometimes wish while realize that it will not stop that more guys would do the same..

you sure that title wasn't in the porn section?

Haha to this point, when I first started dating my now wife she grabbed one of the hunting dvds my buddy and I had and read aloud and comment "10 big boys go down on camera" "Kansas monster gets stuck" . . .her question "Is this hunting or gay porn???"
