Colorado requires orange vest and hat for rifle hunting.

When I'm cold I prefer to wear a hood as opposed to wearing a beanie. Its going to be a pretty high intensity hunt this year and I plan on wearing an orange ball cap most of the time while moving, but when I'm sitting id prefer to put my hood over my hat. Am I going to find a game warden to bitch about that or do you just not worry about having the orange on your head be visible when you're stationary?

I'm certainly not going to be putting a hat on over my hood.

I don't know the legal answer to your question, but personally I pull my hood up over my orange hat when I am glassing and its cold all the time and have never had an issue. I will say that I have never been approached by a game warden while doing so either, you usually find them at trail heads and on roads doing checks for the most part.

I would just make sure your vest is on the outside of your puffy/jacket and you should be pretty damn visible. I would think you might get a verbal warning, but thats all...I couldn't see any of the game wardens I have run into doing any more than that. Unless you give them a reason too...

That's good to hear. Where I'll be, or am hoping to be, he/she will have to gain about 4k feet from the trailhead so at least they will earn it.

I figured it would go down that way but wasn't sure if they're looking for even more extra revenue.

You could pick up a $5 safety vest from walmart and cut a piece off to safety pin to the back of your hood. I put one on the back of my pack since it covers up my orange vest. I don't want any reason to be questioned on it...plus I want as much orange possible for other hunters.

I keep a cheap orange stocking cap in my pack. It is oversized and fits well over a baseball cap. Legal and warm.

Yes you will get a ticket for it if the game warden sees it. They might be nice and only give you a warning, but there is a better chance of getting the ticket for obvious infactions.

You can add some orange patches as other people have mentioned, or just buy a dedicated beanie. Sitka has the blizzard for when it is super cold or a standard one if it is not completely freezing.

Either one of these beanies will fit over your ball cap. Unless it is raining or snowing, I prefer not to wear a hood since it cuts down on my peripheral vision and hearing ability.

Ghee, pull the hood up and don't worry about it. I don't think there is a GW on the planet that will cite you for that if you have the other requirements met. Nor, do I think the law would allow them too. God Bless

Orange visible in 360degrees, stocking cap is the ticket, they are even calling out guys wearing pack over the Orange, I don't rifle hunt but rarely anymore, but do bowhunt small game during rifle seasons and make sure very visible

Seriously!? I am planning on running and gunning and taking my pack everywhere. I guess I can cannibalize an old vest and pin to my pack.

I wouldnt worry about it, unless you're close to a road.

The only time I see a warden is very near a truck

Back in the 80's there used to be a warden that would come through unit 42 on horseback. He'd do a big old loop through the area checking all the backcountry hunters. They've probably squandered all their money to be able to afford the time for wardens to do that anymore.

With all the drama during the mixed seasons (archery, rifle bear,ml) I wouldn't be surprised if they go zero tolerance this year for all seasons.

I was seriously going to wear this hat but left it in Nebraska
