Going to be staying in Meeker and elk hunting for 1st rifle 10/9 thru 10/18
The days before the season opens will be for scouting, but will also have a few days after the close of season before travelling home.

Wife will be travelling with me, but not hunting.

Looking for ideas on what else to do or see in the area for after the season – or sooner if I am lucky with the elk.
Not spending the extra for bear or deer licenses
Fishing any good in October? Can bring my fly rod. Fishing license already included with hunting, right?
Probably a day at Glenwood spring soaking and recovering
Day trip to hike up a 14er?
Any cool historic sites in the area? Ghost towns, mines?
Any recommendations for must eat restaurants or bars?
any other must sees or good things to keep the wife entertained?

fishing is phenomenal in October and you may have the rivers all to yourself. aside from that there is not a lot going on in meeker. There is some damn good food down the road in Rifle and really being in Rifle for big game season is kind of a sight every hunter should see. you will never see more trucks, quads, blaze orange etc than you will in rifle during opener of big game season. It is entertaining.

fishing and wildlife viewing up county road 8 is pretty good all the way to the spill way. I was there this summer and saw deer, bear, turkeys, and a ton of trout.

The diner at the hotel has a lot of cool mounts and history. There is a new restaurant called The Fork that is pretty good, sort of modern and fancy. I like Ma Famiglia (Italian place with a Friday Prime Rib special). Personally, I'd skip the mexican food place unless you are really craving it.

You're a long drive from any 14ers unless you hit them on the way to or from. Many of them require starting well before dawn in order to summit and return in a day. They often have weather extremes, so do a bit of research before hand and go prepared for snow, rain, and lightening.

Rifle falls state park maybe?
Wine and fruit in Fruita and Palisades?

Thanks guys. Definitely willing to drive for things on the days off - unlimited miles on rental car;)
Dinosaur shows as 1.5 hours from Meeker - not too bad.
That is probably a good max radius for us to work with for day trips.

What unit are you hunting? This area is huge. You can fish the area just west of units 23 and 24. The White River but not a lot of public acess. If you are hunting 12 remember no wheel access anywhere in the unit to include a haul out cart. Been hunting this area for over 20 years. Bow only and my son hunts it second rifle. Hot out there right now.

I have the same tag! Being from back east I'm extremely jacked to get back "out west" for an elk hunt! Have hunted this area in the past but not in several years so hopefully not to much has changed.

same tag here, leaving from va in a few days! weather looks clear thru opening day, at least in meeker, who knows up in the hills...

can't remember the name, but in rifle there's a good bbq place across the street from walmart, maybe a couple hundred yards west, near taco bell, we hit it twice last year.

any rec's on places to stay in meeker, prob won't camp this time?

I’ve heard the meeker hotel is a great place to stay with a resteraunt that’s pretty good. We normally stay at the Blue Spruce and that’s always been a good one. Also heard that the small motel on the north side of the road on the main st is good too and the lady that runs it makes awesome breakfast burritos for you to take out in the mornings.

Hard to beat Chicken-Fried-Chicken at the Meeker Cafe - especially after having filled your tag and hauled your elk quarters down the mountain. There is also plenty of dry-ice at the grocery store to keep your elk cool for the drive home!

Deep creek overlook up coffee pot rd above glenwood springs is nice, and you can hike up to hanging lake, also doc holliday's grave site while in glenwood springs, ( my wife loves western history). Also there is a good steak house in gleenwood springs but I cant remember the name.
