Check out the meeker museum, lots of cool items in it, along with the café and meeker hotel. Ma familigias and the fork for food, make a drive up to the Thornburg battle site, east of meeker, tons of history and very interesting story on the battle info.

Deep creek overlook up coffee pot rd above glenwood springs is nice, and you can hike up to hanging lake, also doc holliday's grave site while in glenwood springs, ( my wife loves western history). Also there is a good steak house in gleenwood springs but I cant remember the name.

Some of my e-scouting has lead me to coffee pot rd. and springs area, but also info that the road can be tough to navigate with any snow or wet weather. I guess I'll find out in a week.

Wife loves history, history of early settlers, and has a strange fascination with old cemetaries. Doc Holiday is on the list now. Thanks.

Fishing can be good up on Trappers Lake, anywhere up the white river, but mostly private land.

I grew up in Craig about an hour away. Should be some great hunting.

after three days of driving, arrived in meeker this afternoon! scouting begins tomorrow. weather beautiful here today, walking around in shorts and t shirt. starting from scratch here so certainly won't complain if someone throws me a bone, but hopefully six scouting days will help me get dialed in.

A 14er in mid October is a bad idea. Lots of snow and ice. Done it, and don't recommend. Would rather do it in the middle of the winter.

As mentioned before, you'd have to hit a 14er in transit and the weather can great or brutal. Check 14ers.com for current beta/trip reports. The routes that are doable day trips are kept very upto date on the right hand side of the main page.
It should be pretty good fishing on the white river right now. I have never fished trapper lake, but its beautiful up there and it will get you out of the crowds.

Hit up Iron Mountain Hot Springs. You can go out to the parking lot for drinks and food and come back in. It has a bunch of different pools and a great view. good luck!

So will be driving a lot anyway
Buddy and I hunted on that tag last year. He ended up killing a nice bull nearly 60 miles from where we started the hunt. LOL Lots of ground to cover there for sure.

I 2nd Dinosaur and there is a seldom-visited national wildlife refuge way up NW called Browns Park that's worth a visit. Good luck!
