Meateater

Chernin group owns a controlling majority of meateater. Don't act like he just borrowed money from them and they don’t influence these companies. Bad take

This equity firm is based in California. Of course they are going to give money to those who have a stranglehold in a pay to play environment.

I've been watching a bit of Meateater since I get the Meateater channel on a streaming app I have. I'm truly amazed at some of his hunts and at times just a tad jealous. He had a line in one of his episodes where he said something like, ok you shot it now be a man and eat it. So watching an episode where he goes to an Alaskan Island with a native population of about 200 people in the dead of winter to shoot something like a muskox. Before the hunt he goes out and shoots a red fox and says, I can make something pretty out of this for my wife. That just seemed to rub me the wrong way.

Soooooo, don't watch the show anymore ? You are welcome .

The podcast has morphed. It used to be a funny group of dudes shooting the shit. Now it’s 1990’s Matt Lauer interviewing book authors and scientists. I still enjoy it but don’t consume it as voraciously.

The chernin group was obviously a business decision centered on capital. I can’t blame someone for their need of capital to grow a business. I would say that picking your investor should require some foresight and discretion. Which may have been a misstep here. The Chernin group however may have been a tie-in with his video production group (same as Anthony Bourdain’s)

Steve is egotistical… Period. His eldest brother is rather strange in his writings. Not incorrect, but strange.

All that said, he is eloquent, and an advocate for access to hunting and shooting. His recent hunt/podcast/show in Africa was an amazing way to introduce non-hunters to conservation. His inclusion of Clay Newcomb to the family has also been brilliant. I cannot stand the liberal leaning of some of his employees but he is very outspokenly conservative.

I don’t care what his accent is or isn’t. Mine (being an Appalachian American) would be off putting to most. We should take wins where we can as hunters and conservationists rather than infighting because we don’t like the way someone uses multisyllabic words.

It’s a hard pill to swallow for what happened with Rinella, the great author and story teller, now a sellout ATV salesman who spent his whole life hating on them. Always hated other people ruining his spots and overcrowding. Now he’s a captain of the spot burning and over crowding committee. Pure definition of a sellout. I feel for his soul. I really do. Money and fame going to one’s head is the root of all evil.

I think it has bugged Steve more and more than he became the "Meateater Dude' and really got away from writing and the more literary/introspective end of things. I think the split off is his attempt to recapture that for himself, and leave the BSing to the news show he does. I also think he realized it was odd for a guest to sit there for 30 minutes while everyone else talked around them.

As far as chernin - they have an eye for things cultural and when ME hit big, the opportunity was too big not to take. They do a lot of cross-pollinating across the brands and I don't think it's any surprise they launched the Bloodtrails crime thing when Chernin group has Audiochuck with all the crime podcasts.

Amen brother!!

We’re just looking for shit to get our panties in a twist at this point.

I liked Meateater in its early days, I don’t agree with everything they do or say, and that’s ok to.

Steve is an advocate for hunters, land access and education. It’s ok if we don’t see eye to eye on every subject or issue.

I’d still take them over 99% of TV hunters around at the is point.

He’s smart, articulate, and a successful businessman. He is willing to listen to both sides of an issue. No real surprise in today’s world that so many people hate him.
