I'm glad for this thread - I was thinking about starting one about this podcast. Thanks @msmith@ironwilloutfitters - and I'm assuming you are interested in our take, and questions.

I liked the podcast, even with some of the interruptions. I've also just downloaded the East Meets West podcast referenced above (episode 259 from Aug 30, 2022).

I was an Iron Will convert and had a handful of them but then switched to Valkyrie - I think after listening to a hunting podcast. Perhaps I'm too indecisive or my preferences views change when I hear someone who is very convincing, as I'm actually thinking of switching back to IW after the ME podcast - but I've got quite a bit invested into the Valkyries... (They look to have a pretty long length to width ratio, btw...)

I love that Bill talks so much about physics and math, and it seems that all (or almost all) of what is ideal for an archery setup would be based on physics and math (well, at least the parts that are within our control).

My questions:

1. is there anyone else in the industry (at least those making BHs) relying upon engineering, physics and math?
2. If not, why not?

I’ve been hunting with Iron Will Broadheads exclusively since my moose hunt in 2018 and have been recommending them to anyone I’ve met since then.

After listening to the podcast, I’m glad Bill expressed importance of arrow flight and bow being tuned properly.

A 1200gr arrow will likely blow through any game animal on the planet at 10yds. However, what would max range be with modern day sliding pins? 40yds?

There is a balancing act between velocity and weight. Both are components of kinetic energy and momentum.

As for FOC, there is a point of diminishing returns. To get extreme FOC these days, often times you need to use a lighter arrow which potentially could result in spine issues and also potential of having shaft disentergrate on a hard impact.

Also, Bill is correct in that FOC is not a part of the calculations for momentum or kinetic energy.

I just got back from an elk hunt and stuck an elk in the heart, with a pass through, at 95yds with a 27.5inch 4mm FMJ with a 330 spine, deep six insert, and 100g single bevel. Total arrow weight is 467gr. Animal was dead within yds of impact. At 100yds, I still have around 76ft/lbs of energy and .564lbs/sec momentum.

The key thing, however, is I know where my arrow is going to hit and how it is going to hit.

Iron Wills are cream of crop in my opinion because of the tight tolerances, high quality steel, and ultra sharp. Only complaints I had in the past was rusting when exposed to wet conditions, but problem has gone away with proper care.

To date, I’ve never had an impact on an animal with an iron will that was not as pass through. I’ve taken antelope at 105yds and 80yds with a V100, and one at 75yds with a SB100. An elk at 95yds with a SB100 and one at 85yds with a V100. A moose at 75yds with a pass through on the exit side femur with V100. And a bear at 60yds with a 100g wide series. These aren’t including countless pigs and about a dozen deer with them.

PS- I call BS on double lung shot on cow elk and it making it a mile away. Bill was being diplomatic. I’ve tracked dozens of big game animals in my lifetime, so many I can’t even begin to count. Not one time have I ever seen a legitimate double lung shot where animal has made it past 150yds. Most of the “double lung” shots that make it long distances are single lung or not even lung shots at all.

It’s always a pleasure to listen to Bill. The facts ( read real physics / science ) and testing he brings to table is refreshing considering the prevalence of antidotal bullshit that is typical in archery discussions when it comes to arrows and broadheads
