So I got home from an elk hunt and was in a hurry to get the quarters into the chest freezer. Like an idiot I didn’t separate the quarters and now they are frozen together and also to the walls of the freezer. Do i need to thaw my freezer to get them separated or does anyone have any helpful tips/ tricks to get things squared away? I sure won’t make this mistake again!

I did this once. Luckily I literally only had the meat in there no other food to worry about. I simply unplugged the freezer and used it like a big cooler for a few days and just let thing slowly defrost while staying nice and cold. I did add some block ice to keep the thing from warming up too far.

Thanks that is the same situation I’m currently in. It’s been off for a couple of days and is still stuck together for now. I’ll keep a close eye on it so I can separate them as soon as possibly.

I had the same thing happen this year. The meat was 90% frozen separately, which I thought was hard enough. Tossed them all in the freezer, moved everything a couple of times and it all seemed good, but two days later they were one with each other and the deep freeze. I had to get the cape out for the taxidermist, which was at the bottom and I only had an hour, so boiling water was used. It broke the sides free from the deep freezer quickly and the actual quarters took longer to separate. I had to use a 2x4 as a lever, but after about half an hour and a gallon of boiling water i had everything separated and the. hide enroute to the taxidermist. Cleaned all the water out of the deep freeze and the meat seems 100% ok. They were in game bags still, which I think made it easier.

Had this issue a few weeks back. As stated unplug the freezer and let it sit for a few days. Don’t worry the meat won’t go bad.
