Has anyone dropped the rangefinder and begin using apps to range targets in the field? If so what app is the best? Should clarify this would be for gun hunting, ranges out to roughly 500 yards.

It's not super precise. I've used it to pick out glassing points that I can shoot from, but I don't think it's nearly precise enough to shoot with. If you're adamant about ditching the RF for some strange reason, ranging with a reticle would work better and be faster.

I've used them in a pinch in bad weather, but I'd stick with a range finder when possible. Avenza PDF Maps has a good measuring tool.

As a nationally ranked precision shooter this is a bad idea. Best to use a lrf if you want to be even mildly close.
