Maven vs nightforce

Yep, I was going to suggest the SWFA 3-15 considering the distances given.

Regardless of that, my wife was shooting my 20” Tikka .308 at 1000 yards with an SWFA 3-15 Gen 2 last weekend. It’s plenty of glass and is considerably cheaper than the other options.
My 3-9 is showing up tomorrow, for the ranges ill be hunting and the eye box past x10 on the 15 I decided to save some money.

If I get to point of shooting/hunting past 700 yards, that's when I'll step to Maven or NF.

I own a few NX8s in both magnification flavors. I think they're really hard to beat.

Haven't looked through the Maven but excited to check it out because it's about half the cost.

The 4x32 is my favorite and will be super hard to beat. You cant go wrong with either. The NXS is another solid option although you won't save weight with anything but the 2.5x10

I would have zero interest in going to 32x even at double your stated range.

I haven’t run the 3-9 but I wanted the GEN2 for the zero stop so I went with the 3-15.

I have an NX8 2.5-20 on my 6.5 PRC and the RS1.2 on my 243AI, regardless of the gun I was taking hunting I would take the RS1.2. I have zero issues with the NX8, but for what I've encountered for shot opportunities in Colorado over my life I think the Maven would be the ticket. I agree with the comment on reticles and the Maven works better for me.

Well, I guess I will throw my nickel in. I prefer a SFP scope for hunting. I recently bought a FFP just to see what the hub bub was about. Ater playing with it, I have learned that they are not what I am looking for. All my nightforce, Sig Sauer, and Trijicon are SFP with the CR2 style reticle, I like the upper part of the scope view to be clear of stuff you don't need. I am good to all the distances I shoot. I know the holdover of all my guns, so no need to be turning dials and like the fact when I am in the woods and look through my scope I have a clear view of my crosshairs.

NF nxs/nx8 cant go wrong in my experience. Comes down to a dot within cross or just cross at center of reticle. I have been liking the dot within lately… getting older eyes. I have first and second focal i prefer second.

I find hold over is simply more mental load, especially when holding for wind and trying to float the target something like 4.6 mils up and 1 mil right.

Mentally it is much easier to dial elevation and hold wind. This then leaves more mental capacity to focus on executing the shot well, which as the conditions become less ideal, becomes more important.

Dialing is faster and easier for me too. I also don’t mind SFP, as long as we’re not talking about high magnification. Over 12-15X with SFP is a bad mix. On standard range scopes like a 3-9/10X, I see no advantage to FFP personally.

I prefer SFP too. Does anybody know if Maven will release a SFP in the RS1.2?

Doubt it. The RS1.2 2.5-15x44 is definitely better as FFP with 15 on the top end.

If they made a RS 1.2 2.5-10x44, that would definitely be a compelling SFP option. That would definitely give the little NF NXS a run for its money!

Agreed.

Explain why you think high magnification and SFP are a bad mix. I'm curious.

I assume you have never tried to determine if a bull elk is a true spike out of a group of spike bulls @800 yards going through the trees or is that large 2pt mule deer have eye guards over 1 inch at 600 yards. We like to get the 2pt mulies out of the gene pool when they get that big.

Haha. You would absolutely assume incorrectly. That’s what a spotting scope is for!

Again, FOV matters. It’s been covered in greater detail on other posts just recently. I don’t have the time or energy now to retype it all. Surely you could search for relevant threads. But suffice it to say, if you aren’t aware of the importance of FOV and its relationship to FFP vs SFP and reticle subtensions, you may want to study up.

Everybody has their opinion, you believe in your methods, and I have mine. Good as time as any to leave it at that.;)
