Maven vs nightforce

Any decent glass brother. 400 yards with your 7 prc is going to be an easy hold over shot if you have a 200 yard zero. just over the top of deers back or at the spine of an elk. No fancy reticles needed… but if just because, then get the nx 8

I can understand not liking a cluttered Christmas tree style reticle, but as long as you have windage hash marks in a granular enough scale to be useful, what makes one reticle better than another?

I’ve never considered it.
Thick outer stadia so it is visible on low magnification in poor light on a dark background.

The Maven RS 1.2 SHR-MIL could use thicker outer stadia, but they are not bad.

SWFA Mil-Quad is a better reticle, but the RS1.2 is the better all around scope in my opinion.

I own the nx8 in 4-32 and 2-20. For a 400yd gun I think the 2x is the ticket of the two.

I was shooting chucks at a couple hundred yards a few weeks ago and the FOV on the x32 was terrible.

I would hate the x32 as an up close scope and I don't think it really shines until you get 800ish and beyond.

Both have their fanboys and their detractors. You honestly are going to get into a great optic either way so it comes down to what's important to you when it comes to price and magnification etc.. All I know is you won't have a 7 PRC with either scope and have a 400 yrd limit. Almost defeats the purpose of high powered scope on that cartridge.

Buy the scope, hit the range, and you'll be out to at least 600-750 in absolutely no time!

That’s is my plan. I need to practice and learn my equipment so I can be accurate to longer distances. I’m late to the long range rifle game. I’m good out to range with a stick and string. Just never took rifles too serious as a kid. Now in my forties I’m trying to learn, practice, and get lethal beyond my current limits.

Having both scopes mentioned, it's an easy recommendation for the Maven rs1.2 for a hunting scope. Easy eye box with good FOV and tons of eye relief. Simple reticle works from 2.5 up. Easy target acquisition close in for snap shots.

I’m looking to put a new scope on my 7prc havak element. I’ve narrowed it down to a couple choices. Either the NF nx8 4-32x50 or the maven RS 1.2 2.5-15x44. Both scopes would be FFP and mil.

Used for general hunting and in my area shots could be 50-100 yards up to 400 yards. Not confident in anything beyond at the moment. I really don’t need the 32x on the NF but have heard it’s a better FOV than the 20x. Of course concerned about reticle size at low power. Both scopes seem to be reliable with good reputations.

Thanks in advance.

Funny I was in this same exact situation with the same exact rifle and same 2 scope options.

After reading about every post on every hunting forum it seemed, I went with the Maven RS1.2 because of the reticle. Got my deposit on the Element 7PRC, and impatiently awaiting my dealer to get it in.

The RS 1.2 had just been sitting in the box the last couple of months but when playing with it, I’ve been extremely impressed with glass clarity, reticle at lower power, illumination, etc compared to other scopes I own, and can’t wait to hunt with it.

Used the NF nx8 4-32x50 at the range for about 40 rounds of 300 PRC a couple months ago and it’s a great scope, but the 32 power was kind of meh for me to shoot with even for punching paper.

Can’t go wrong either way.

Absolutely, you will always hold the gun back more than it does you. But that’s why I only said 600-760. A military sniper could take that setup out to a mile. So all I’m saying is a well practiced shooter shouldn’t be below 600 yards with that. At that point it’s effort rather than skill.
The amount of shooting required for military snipers training is not what you think. Likely, the average prs dipshit can outshoot them unless they are spending their own time and money getting better, which some do. There are a lot of other skills needed to be a good sniper besides shooting, but our military is not heavily invested in having the best shooters when it comes to snipers.

Chalk another vote for the Maven, and like others have said, that is mostly reticle preference. That's all personal preference.

If you're shooting long range, the nod may go to Nightforce.

Mavin for me. I don't need the upper X's on the NF but I do need the lower X's (6x-8x especially) where the reticle in the Mavin is a better fit for the hunting I do.

Maven for the multitude of reasons already given, plus by buying Maven you’re supporting a company that doesn’t actively support poachers. Can’t say that about NightForce.

Very very true. My point was that anyone with some form structured training could take that setup well beyond his 400 yard limit he set for himself.

I don’t have an nx8. I have rs1.2 in mil, Hard to beat the maven for the price, and the reticle is nice. I haven’t put it thru the paces yet. I also have an nxs 2.5x10, it is moa, but shoots easily out to 600+ yrds, is 6oz lighter and bombproof.

Not trying to hijack. But curious, why not a swfa at those ranges?
Yep, I was going to suggest the SWFA 3-15 considering the distances given.

Regardless of that, my wife was shooting my 20” Tikka .308 at 1000 yards with an SWFA 3-15 Gen 2 last weekend. It’s plenty of glass and is considerably cheaper than the other options.
