We didn’t participate in the design of the RS.1.2. But after the RS.5 failed the drop test. Maven asked a bunch of questions focused on the scopes that passed. I email each company after form does the test, pass or fail. Maven and Zeiss are the only companies to call and ask me questions. Maven by far has had the most communication with me. They also asked what the perfect RS scope is and this is what I sent them.

Long Range Hunter
3-18x44 or 4-16x42
30mm
Zero Stop
Mil
FFP
Simplified THLR Reticle
Exposed Elevation Turret
Capped windage Turret
20-22ish oz
Pass the Rokslide Drop test

They have come very very close.

Really, really close to what I asked Trijicon to build. Maven listened to you and will likely be rewarded.

January 2022 was Form’s drop test of the RS.5

Seems like a pretty fast turn to incorporate changes and get released, especially given LOW’s inability to get any SWFA scopes out

44 hits a bit of a sweet spot in a scopes objective end. Balances light transmission, field of view, mounting options, and weight just about as well as you can.
I would not quibble with a 44. Though I’ve had enough scopes optically do all I need at 40-42, so any more is just excess size and weight (for me). SHV 3-10x42, NXS 2.5-10x42, SWFA SS 3-9x42, Burris FFII 3-9x40, VX-3 3-9x40 are ones I’ve used and all work fine in +/-30 min shooting light. I do feel a 36mm is too small.

Maybe next year they can come out with a weight weenie model for you guys. 3-12x42. Personally I don’t mind the extra few ounces 🤷
For me personally, the 12 top end is because a 3-4x erector has better light transmission than a 6x erector and most of my shots are at first/last light. I also don’t need/want 18 on the top end for the distances I shoot

Yep.

In practical field conditions, how many people are really going to notice the difference between 2.5 and 3 on a low-end magnification? Probably not many, and possibly no-one.

But how many are going to notice the light transmission and improved reliability of a 5x vs a 6x erector? My guess is that this would be more ... so the 2.5-15 x range doesn't make sense to me. But I'll still take it.

I like a little extra magnification but not really for the shooting. Had a herd of cows and spikes this year in Montana at 400 yards fairly low light. Was nice to zoom in on the bushy to 15-18x to confirm I wasn’t about to shoot a spike. Not a good time to get off the gun and verify in the binos/spotter. Took the shot on 10ish power IIRC. We also shoot some tiny forked horn bucks in CA and it’s nice to verify before pulling the trigger 😀

Still find it difficult to believe that a few ounces one way or another is such a decision point for some. I don't care to schlep extra weight up the mountain, either, but what's an extra few ounces?
