I was taught (from reading here and the S2H class) that quick drop is not really intended for use much beyond 500 yards as it’s less consistent at further distances. Additionally, the margin for error is significant enough with elevation/wind for longer shots that many people rely on a calculator or at least the phone lock screen at ranges beyond 500. Quick drop is meant for quick shots and rarely are people shooting quickly at ranges beyond 500 yards, probably much closer for most.

I agree. I was just trying to throw a bone to the moa guys 😅

I printed out some drop and wind cards and tape them to my stock last fall so that I wouldn't have to mess with my phone in a longer shot situation. It worked very well

Is everyone’s illumination pretty dim with this scope? I have never had an illuminated reticle before so not sure what I was expecting but I thought it would be brighter. On level ten on low power it’s still barely visible.

Mine was very dim compared to other scopes but I was OK with it because I would only use it in very low light. I have a NF SHV that's so bright the whole reticle tree glows even though it's only supposed to be center illumination, terrible.

Oh lol I just realized who I replied to and that's the same scope. I hope you like it, but hopefully somebody else will chime in with their experience as well to be sure it's not just that one scope.

Seems like the verdict on this scope is pretty positive minus the turrets having a tendency to move? Looking for an optic for a lightweight 308 rifle for whitetails. This scope is about as heavy as I want to go. Other options in the running are the Vortex LHT (don’t like the reticle) or a Leupold VX6 (MOA only and I’m really trying to buy all new spices in Mils). On paper the Maven is just about perfect. I’ve got the RS2 2-10 on an 18” BAR that I enjoy very much.

This will go against popular RS opinion but I prefer the lht for your scenario. What don’t you like about the reticle? It’s similar. For a lightweight whitetail gun, the LHT would be sweet.

I’ve shot the maven for a year or so now, and for a few big game season and I like it, not hating on it but I think I’ll trade it out for an nx8.

How's that RS2 holding up? Really really wanna buy one in plain duplex and see how it dials. I hate their other reticle for it.

You want lighter, get a SWFA 3-9HD. In its weight class the RS 1.2 is the winner. I don't like wasting 30 rounds of good ammo to zero more than once, but if you do ... sure, get a leupold or vortex.

I like the mag range on the Maven, a lot more than a 3-9. I’ve been reading enough awful things about Leupold to be turned off for good, less so about the higher end Vortex options.

It’s not that I hate it. To be fair the reticle on the 42mm objective is pretty similar, but on the 50 I don’t really like it. If I went LHT I’d do the 50 although the 42 is more of a direct comparison.

Which NX8 do you like?

I really don’t have a dog in this fight, but read this. The LHT had, even by vortex standards, a shocking performance.

Only hunted with that rifle once so I can’t give you a thorough review of durability. But it sure is a nice scope for its purpose. Won’t ever get dialed so if it holds zero it’s perfect. Granted the BAR it’s on isn’t exactly a precision gun so it will be hard to say exactly where if any the imperfections reside.

4-32. Similar weight and I like the big power in the back country when I don’t have a spotter.

I like the 42mm objective. I’ve never had an issue with light transfer and I can get it nice and low to the action. The illumination knob leaves a lot to be desired, but otherwise it’s been solid.

Hey now, you must have gotten rid of your 2-10 Mark4 I take it? 😂 The only time I waste 30 rounds of ammo zero’ing my mark4 is to shoot small 10 round groups 3x over…

Wow that’s wildly disheartening to read. I take it the Maven performed better in a similar test?

I was looking at the 2.5-20. I’m more concerned with a lower low end than I am the high end. I liked the NX8 2.5-20 but it’s a touch too heavy for what I’m trying to do I think. Plus it doesn’t have locking turrets just like the Maven.
This scope is a better hunting scope than the NX8. This is the current best MIL hunting reticle available in my opinion. Combine that with how robust it is, better glass than NX8, and better eye box/ it’s hard to beat right now for me.
I read a lot about the tight eye box on the NX8.

I don’t see the same eye box issues with the 32x as the 20x. I don’t have as much time behind either as I do the maven or LHT though. Have you noticed a difference in the 2 NX8s?
