I've compared them and I couldn't tell a difference, The maven is a half pound lighter so I ended up keeping it.

I didn't have mine at the same time, but I had a Cabelas Krotos (Athlon Ares) and I currently have the Maven CS.1. The Maven is small and light. Great little spotter. I really thought the Athlon was a good spotter too. I'd probably give the edge to the Athlon on image color and rendition as that really stood out to me. I wish I could have compared them side by side. The Maven is sharp and very usable except at the highest magnification. The Athlon was similar that way. I think the buy on the Athlon through Doug at Camera Land is good enough I would go that route if the extra weight didin't bother me. But if you are looking for a small, lightweight spotter that competes well the Maven is great. The Kowa 55 series is better in every regard, but costs 2.5x as much.

I have the Maven CS.1. I really like it for what I do with it, but I don't have experience with Athlon. The Maven I received does have a little resistance in the focus wheel - almost like there is a burr that occasionally rubs. Using it at the highest magnification causes some eye strain due to light transmission, but it's not too bad. The Maven is outstanding for the price!

I have the Ares and it is great, I wanted to look thru the Maven but couldn't find one to look thru for comparison. I love their rangefinder and that glass is great but finding one to look thru is tough. I'm still trying to find a run and gun pack that will protect it and hold a tripod and a 3l bladder, kneeling pad and game bags.
