Matchking X

I know this thread was mostly people shitting on Sierra, but they have MKX bullets available to ship on their website—including a 6mm 107gr. Just ordered some of the 175gr 308s to try out.

Be good to see some results.

I think it was mostly that they missed the mark with having potential but not producing anything great. If they preform great though in some way which there's nothing to suggest they will (but they could) that would be great. Let us know how they go (at take some necropsy pics it you kill with them).

It was kind of like the release of the gamechangers when it's a big advertising run then the performance doesn't even come close to the hornady or berger offerings. The TMK shines primarily because it's terminal performance is so great you can forgive it's trashy bc.

107smk has a verified g7 of around 278-279 in my testing. The advertised g7 of the 107 smk X is 244. Significantly different bullets unfortunately.

What do you think accounts for that difference if weight and external dimensions are the same?

Do we think they’re being less than precise in saying dimensions are the same?

SMKs have put many two legged creatures on the ground…over many years.

There’s lots of green boxes on the shelves right now. I’m stocking up for the next shortage. You know, when you won’t be able to find any color box on the shelves…like the last three shortages.

I think sierra makes great products and will continue to buy what they have…cause their stuff works. For those that don’t like what they have going on, fine, more for me.

Strange they would make a "Match" King "with hunters in mind"...Why not make a high BC Tipped "GameKing"? In general guys that know, know. But the vast majority of people will instantly say "that is a match bullet not for hunting"

They do make a Tipped Game King with a pretty decent BC.

There is no way external dimensions/weight are the same and they have that big of a BC gap so either their BCs are wrong (which would pose the question-why undersell by so much?) or they aren't really the same shape.

If they went from pointed on the MK to having a large meplat on the X that could make a difference but their stock pictures make them look like pointed meplats.

yeah I know. That is the point. Why not GameKing X or Terminal GameKing or Wide Wound Channel Game King. Calling it a Match...with worse BC and keeping hunters in mind makes zero sense.

I for one think it's cool that Sierra is going to be the one to bridge the gap between the "match" and "hunting" bullets. Seems like they're admitting that the matchking stuff has and continues to be used for hunting or soft tissue applications. Kudos to them for ripping the bandaid off the consumer education to break out of the ruts of the typical hunting and match bullet discussions. I didn't think it would be them to push the boundaries since they have dedicated lines of both match and hunting bullets.

A 120gr 6mm and a 140gr 25cal would get me rocked up. I have a feeling it's coming.

I'm currently only using the 77gr TMK and it has been quite good. Sierra says the matchking line has a thicker jacket.
If the TMK is working so well, them creating another line doesn't make any sense IMHO. They'd be farther ahead to promote the lines they have and spend money on more production equipment.

The problem is they cannot promote the TMK as a hunting bullet. Thus a new line that can be. Perhaps the tipped matchking X should be next on the horizon.

Agree on production. Where are the 95gr TMKs...

Actually I won't, if their G1 advertised (.477) is correct (it's way lower than the .547 of the SMK 107)

Sierra has stated they plan to possibly faze out the 95tmk, because this new 107smk-X is allegedly so much better. But it's not......bc on the 95 is better, and it can be driven to much higher velocity, and runs in a 9tw just fine, doesn't need hardly any freebore to be seated optimally in a case neck.

Sounds like sensible decision on their part🤣

Wow, just reading this.

My god, what did Sierra do to some of you?!? So much hate 🤣.

I, for one, absolutely love Sierra billets. I just got a 6 BR barrel and I tried two bergers (105vldh and 105 hybrid), plus the 103 ELDX. And the 107 SMK.

The 107 SMK was absolutely the most accurate bullet and the BC is HIGHER than what AB lists. At least in my rifle. All the others bullets were also excellent, I am by no means knocking someone’s favorite bullet here.

Same story in a 6.5 Creed. I tried all the usual suspects and the 130 TMK was definitely the most accurate.

I have a 308, first load I tried with the 195 TMK shot great. No fuss whatsoever.

Sure, if you change rifles, the Hornady stuff could pull ahead. Or the Berger bullets could win the day. I just personally have never reached for the “green box” and been even a little disappointed. I can’t say that for the other two.

The point? They make excellent bullets. Their BC’s are comparable to all the new stuff out there in real world applications. Like, let me blow your mind gentleman, .15-.25 points of G1 BC is utterly negligible. Almost makes zero difference whatsoever. Don’t believe me? Plug it in your calculator. Or, better yet, go shoot at long range.

I for one don’t care if I have to dial an extra tenth or two at 800 yards. That will exactly zero percent matter in regards to an impact on target. Terminal velocity? You might get 50-70 yards of additional range from a slightly higher bc bullet.

Who cares.

What I do care about, and LOVE about Sierra Bullets is that they are extremely accurate and incredibly easy to find a load for. That means I get to spend more time shooting and less time moving seating depth twenty thousands at a time until I think I’m getting somewhere. When I hear someone talking about that voodoo my eyes glaze over. I just don’t have time for it. I’m not a benchrest guy or an Fclass shooter……and you probably aren’t either if you’re reading this. I want to quickly load a bunch of accurate ammo and go train. Sierra bullets do exactly that.

Regarding the MKX, at this point there is one gel test on YouTube (Ultimate Reloader). Apparently, this bullet is freaking awesome. At least in that test.

I have an elk hunt coming up in a couple months and I was planning on taking my 6.5 creed with the tried and true 130 TMK load. I might still do that. I do though have 500 142 MKX’s on order and if they shoot well (I bet they will), I’m going to try that bullet out.

I think we should all keep an open mind.
