Mandatory Military Service

I don't think the idea is BS. It has really good things that could happen as a result. But I could see a large potion of the population resisting, but because it's the military, but because of who creates the rule.

Things have become so tribal politically people choose sides because of who they support at the ballot box and not because it is the right thing to do.

I’d support compulsory service, but not exclusively military. Military, Peace Corps, Forest Service, Humane Society, etc

As long as you’re serving something bigger than yourself that also gets you outside your local bubble

Rugged individualism is what built the country, but over time it’s turned into individual centric entitled mindset. Any kind of public service that encourages a “WE” over “ME” mindset, I’m all in for.

Lots of knock on effects though to the economy, ie. Housing prices, etc since so much of the labor force will be taken away from higher paying corporate jobs to ostensibly lower paying public service jobs

I didn’t take the time to read the whole thread but looked through about half the responses and I’ll ask the number 1 question that comes to my mind but nobody seems to be asking, you say this would help the country because of the number of homeless and drug addicts but how many of those homeless and drug addicts did the military actually create? I mean this as no slight to our fine military members but it seems as though the US military chews up and spits out a percentage of people and while I understand there are a lot of benefits for veterans it seems like some of those services may be very lacking at helping those who may need it the most.

So no I don’t think mandatory military service is the answer

I’ve had this conversation before during one of those situations you find yourself in with all the time to sit there and solve the worlds problems...It is my belief that a conscript could help change things for the better but with some caveats.

The standards for entry would have to become more stringent. Maybe not so much on the weight standard but for sure a better physiological eval and standard. Norway for example has a conscript for men and women but only accepts a small fraction.

The minimum acceptable military service would be with the national guard for 2 years. That way, those that want to be in the regular services aren’t stuck with those that really don’t want to be there. Also, the individual may want to stay closer to home for various reasons.

As an alternative to military service for the conscientious objector, etc., doing 2 years of wildland fire fighting since it shares a lot of similarities to the military in building good character but would still be provide a needed service to nation.

This hypothesis might sound all well enough on paper but also might be logistically infeasible.

Instead of mandating our youth, I’d rather see some of our politicians and current administration mandated to serve some of the lower military positions so they have a better understanding of our country.

Your idea is one of the most out field ones I’ve seen in awhile.

F that commie idea. If you think is that great idea you take your family over to China or North Korea . I’m sure they’d love to have you.

Gym class with red balls? Better option?

First off, I respect our veteran’s and servicemen for what they do.

I regularly buy lunches for a few homeless guys near me. All of them are former military. Their country failed them…. Former military members also have a much higher chance of suicide. No reason to throw more cogs into that wheel. Especially people who didn’t want to do it in the first place. I think this would overall be extremely detrimental to the country. Also, extremely wasteful.

I’d be more inline to support a Heinlein type citizenship idea. If you want to vote you need some skin in the game whether it be military service or some other federal service.

I use to think it wouldn't be a bad idea, now, I"m not so sure when I see a good majority of young kids these days.

I came from an era that had it, they called it “the draft”. 2 years of my life taken by our government, so a perspective from someone who’s been there, bad idea! I say that because Bubblehide had it right, not everyone is suited for it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud of my service but it was a different time, one that is thankfully gone. The men and women in service now do so by choice and have my utmost respect and gratitude for the job they do.

Does the US government own your life? Do we have a King? Communist country? What happens when you give a government a standing army that it doesn’t have to sell on the merits of a cause?
