So there is an ongoing thread about drug addicts living in the street in tents, wherever they please (AKa homeless) and current situation here in the US. Is not working. There are a number of things that could turn the corner on the current drug epidemic, but I seriously would be in favor of mandatory military service being discussed by the powers to be.

After HS you want to go to college? Great, upon completion those graduates could enlist as officers. College isn’t in your future? Then you simply fulfill your obligations as an enlisted member. There are a number of reasons this would be a net positive. Men looking like men for one.

Edit…… this is for all US citizens and legal residents.

Thoughts?

You want conscription in the US? I'll tell you as someone who trained South Koreans conscripts, most of them view it as a burden and hate it. I mainly dealt with ROK Marines and they are awesome. The army guys not so much. Mandatory service is a huge political topic over there for good reason. Every normal male is 2 years behind every woman and all of the guys who scrape together a deferment. I would much rather the guy to my left and right be a volunteer that chose to be there over a draftee.

I, as many on this forum served as volunteers. As a young infantry field grade officer, I had the privilege of working with the best young men this country has produced. Not all of them, but an overwhelming majority. I think mandatory military service would affect that negatively. It’s a privilege to have served voluntarily.

Good way to screw up the military. Plus, why the hell would we as tax payers want to pay conscripts to scrub the same toilet 20 times in one day. There is nothing for those people to do. Full conscription is for small countries and countries in large wars that need cannon fodder.

I think it's the type of idea that wouldn't be good for the country or the military either.

I’ve thought about this before as well. I settled on some sort of public service would be good maybe. I’m not fully in support of this but I would like to see something that shows a lot of these people to appreciate to the things and people that earned them the right to act and talk like they do. There is a huge disconnect between the men and women in the trenches and the avg high school grad.

yeah, something like a short mandatory civil service

There are plenty of people that can earn a degree but have no business being officers. There needs to be criteria, officer or not. Simply put, some people are not cut out to be in the military.
For sure. I totally agree with this. It was more along the lines of “I want continue my education en college first”. From there they have “admin stuff” out of the way, and then the criteria of being an officer would need to be met.
