Lower energy arrow weight for Sevr 1.75

What is the lightest arrow I can get away with shooting the Sevr 1.75 with my specs?

Assumptions:
- These are not giant corn-fed midwestern deer. I will only hunt deer or turkeys with this arrow.
- Bow setup is an RX-7 ultra drawing 28.5 inches and 62 lbs.
- I regularly pass shots on deer if the angle is not ideal. I usually get rewarded with a chip shot later.
- My aimpoint for broadside or quartering away angles is lower 1/3 of the chest in line with the opposite leg.
- I have killed deer out to 59 yards with my old bow setup (stinger 4 blade on 460 gr arrows).
- All broadhead blades will be touched up and stropped.
- I will shoot 125 grain Sevr 1.75 ( purchased a bunch on sale).
- the Sevr FAQ recommends a 60 lbs compound for their 2.0 cut, but does not mention arrow weight.

Please comment to add data points if you are having success with 2.0 inch 2-blade mechanicals and pulling 65 lbs or less.
-comment with results, broadhead, draw length, draw weight, and arrow weight.

Sonic with a collar, skip the brass there's no point in adding weight without strength. Fyi the new Easton 5.0 that is coming out that is a little lighter than the Axis.

Hit me up if you need anything I do custom builds.

Using the Sevr 2.0 at 27” draw and 67# draw weight, with a 410gr arrow I did not have pass-through on the three deer I shot with with them, but the blades completely ravaged the lungs and the longest runner was 60yds. The first was 35yds broadside. The second was 22yds slight quarter away, and the 3rd was 11yds from the top down through one lung and the h half the heart. Given the damage they did, I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again. Although I’m going to try the Megameat next year for comparison.

Here's some food for thought. I wrote this previously based on not getting a pass through with a 1.5. My vote is skip the 1.75 and do a 2.0 or 1.5 hybrid.

Let's look at @Bowhuntr64 John Lusk's data on the penetration of these 3 mechanicals to see what we can learn. As you can see in the below table - the Sevr 1.5 does penetrate more. However, the gain in penetration over the 1.75 in PT1 is zero and only 5% in PT2 - effectively no loss in penetration for 17% more cut. The 2.0 loses only 8-9% over the 1.5 while gaining 33% more cut size. These tests John does in cardboard and gel typically give a disadvantage to more surface area - so logically the losses shown from 1.5 to 2.0 are actually over stated in his tests.

My takeaway on this data is that if you're going to blow your energy load with a mechanical on a whitetail, antelope or mule deer - you might as well go full size 2.0 Sevr or eq and get the benefit.

RX7 at 62lbs and 28.5 draw is not really low energy set up!

I have had many pass throughs with virtually identical specs, all the way down to a 360 grain arrow.

I think right around 400 grains is the sweet spot for stand hunting, so either sonic would be my choice.

And your pass thru hits were ribs and lung hits with a 2 in mech?

I don't expect to zip right through the scapula and shoulder blade with the sevr 1.75 like I did with the magnus stinger.

The practice feature, amazing flight profile and slick locking design made me Curious enough to try the sevr.

My uncle has killed 200+ deer with between 60 and 70 lbs and wasp jackhammer 3 blades. So if I wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel I'd just use that. I think he shoots 450-480 grains usually.

Yeah no heavy bones and mostly whitetail does.

I’ve punched the ulmer edge through the scapula of three mature bucks, no pass through but buried to off side.

Ulmer edge is basically the original sevr if you weren’t familiar, those three with with 450 grains from what I remember.

I had no issues with pass thrus on whitetails and mule deer with the sevr 1.5 using a 390 grain, @ 27.5" out of PSE Fortis 33 with S2 cams at 72#. One problem you have is that the RX-7 Ultra is really a 315-320 ibo bow at lower draw lengths. I got one and played with it for awhile, it was a great shooter, but really slow compared to other bows out there, so I sold it.

I bought it knowing full well it will not be a speed demon. Hence why I'm trying to lighten up my arrows to keep a flat trajectory. I posted this poll because I want to know what arrow weight I can get away with. I expect the bow to be smooth and forgiving--things I value especially in the colder months.

If I buy the standard sonic and cut from both ends, then add brass, It is still on par with the match grade shafts for price and I shouldn't give up too much straightness.

I'm also trying to get away from paying 200+ for a set of 12 built arrows. I'm just killing deer locally.

I managed whitetail property for some wealthy guys for a while, killed a ridiculous amount of does late season every year, one year I had an injury so I dropped my bow to 50lbs.

Shooting mostly 1.5 inch 2 blade mech. heads pass through shots were the norm, even had a few with a 2 inch old school rage.

50lbs at 28.5 draw 380 grain arrow with a 340 ibo bow.

I appreciate the data points. My only archery deer were all killed with magnus stinger and buzzcut 2/4 blades at 60 lb, 28.5 in draw and 342 ibo with arrow weights from 430 to 495. All were pass thrus including 2 scapula hits and one that exited the ball joint and split it. The split bone was with the 430 grain arrow.

I was aiming further forward than I would with the Sevr 1.75.

I would not expect complete pass throughs with 2.0” mechanicals, some might but most won’t in my experience. They should penetrate enough to work, but arrow will typically stay in them (hang on fletching or pull back inside if you hit offside shoulder/leg).

I have shot 60lbs-72lbs at 27.5” draw. Arrow weights 350 up to 450 grains. I have shot a lot of standard slick tricks, two blade single bevels, and 2” mechanicals (rage/schwacker) at whitetail. I never lost a deer for not having enough penetration, just low shots (brisket or leg) or misses.

As expected I see more pass throughs with fixed blades, but still had some hang up/break.

currently shooting 2” schwackers for the extra cut, haven’t gotten a single clean pass through with them yet (450gr at 266fps).

Good data points. With the Swhacker I'd be concerned with the small entry if I didn't get an exit.

For sure no exist could make for a difficult blood trail, but I’m getting plenty of penetration.

I do like how they don’t accidentally deploy though, I quit using rage due to that issue (no matter what design they are). Still use rage for turkeys, but not deer.

That's actually why I plan to go to them. The sacrifice in penetration is worth the less fiddle factor.

Thorn, Sevr, Deadmeat/megameat. Etc all deploy in quivers sometimes

I have already hunted a few times with sevr and at least with a mathews style quiver, I haven't had any issues with premature deployment--nobody wants that-- My old bow is a mathews

I just haven't put the sevr through a deer yet.
