Lost

Still no horns. The last shipment of horns, capes, skulls and such has arrived at Wildlife Galleries without my horns. They did a good job keeping in touch with me as I hoped my horns were accidentally loaded with my bear skull and hide. I’m not getting much response from our transporter over the past few weeks and I’m loosing hope on ever getting them back.

They have you write on a tag for each bag of meat, cape and horns where you want them to go. I’m not sure when they shipped my cape that tag also says to ship my horns on AK Cargo why no one questioned then where are this guys horns.

I’m not sure what I could have done differently, maybe an AirTag?

This is bs. Someone needs held accountable. I split mine ,boxed it up and mailed it home . They got to Pa about the time i got home. The meat i checked as luggage and all was good.

Who was the transporter? If anything, maybe this will help others avoid the same poor experience.

You just have to do all you can to document everything you can. I think there is such an Alaskan rush the past few yrs that transporters, guides, gear renters and outfitters are scrambling to capitalize on the demand. Sometimes the wrong person is in a position that’ll is stretched to far or they are not organized enough to deal with the volume of hunters.
In addition to my horns when we returned back home we received a call from the transporter that we did not pay for our night of lodging (200.00 per person for me and my partner)after we came out of the field. After calling 3 different people within their outfit I finally reached a ground assistant who walked us over to the office for a cash payment. I took 6 guys up to hunt as 3 camps each with 2 guys. The grounds crew loaded one of the guys sleeping bag on the wrong plane. They did drop off a loaner bag before dark so it was not as bad as it could have been.

Overall we had a great hunt (killed 6 bulls for my group) but when this is most likely a OIL hunt for avg Joes go the extra mile to dbl check everyone and everything.

Congrats on your hunt. This is just devastating, and we all feel for you.

I live in the KC area so I will keep an ear out for any weird moose antler stories in case the antlers somehow did make it to MCI.

Thanks. The original airbill showed they only dropped off my cape.

Well, in all honesty i’d allow myself to be pissed for a bit. Once that was out of my system i’d attempt to figure out how to find them. Then when that proved futile (because they’re intentionally gone to whoever helped themselves) i’d simply move on.

Life is too short to worry about antlers. Granted it took me about 30 years of hunting to figure that out myself. But i now realize when im dead and gone my antlers are all going to be landfilled cause im the only one who ever gave a dang about them.

I’m in the 2nd stage, and running out of what ifs and dead ends. I figure another month or 2 then I’ll start thinking about crappie , turkeys and morels.

A 66 inch moose rack does not end up missing. Someone along the line took it home. I detest a thief and hope you can find it.
That’s what I believe also. There are more details I have not revealed yet that are odd. The light bulb should have came on with the transporter when the shipped a cape only that had a tag saying cape and horns shop on AL Cargo. It would have been easier to track them down in the first 2-4 days vs the transporter hoping they were on a convex box headed South that arrived 5 weeks later. They dropped the ball many times when I received my cape 3 days after getting back to MCI with no horns

I can really feel for the op. I'm in a similiar situation. As has been stated you can't take mounts with you and my kids wont want them when I tip over. Hopefully they end up in a sporting goods store where someone enjoys seeing them. I thought the just take pictures. Hang them up and the memories will be enough. Dont spend the money on taxidermy. Probably once a week I walk around the house look at the the animals I've been blessed to harvest.whether it was 40 years ago or last year. It takes me back to the moment just like it was yesterday. The travel, camp, being miserable cold and wet. The stalk, the mistake that busted me. The moment of truth. Bull moose coming in raking trees tipping his head back and forth. grunting. The scope scar.going back to a cold tent and dehydrated meal.only for anticipation of the next day. Everyone is different but for me looking at a picture of my moose antlers and the euro moose antlers after a fire at the taxidermist is not the same. It is hard for me to look at.
