I think most people over complicate things. I’ve used 30mm class binoculars for years. First some Nikon Edg and now some Kowa Genesis. I’ve never used a tripod for my binoculars. Always handheld. Always fine at first light and until we’ll past to dark to shoot. Lighter more compact binoculars are so much more comfortable and in quality glass, you give up very little in real world performance. I’m a huge glass snob and these 32-33mm binoculars perform wonderfully.

I live on the east coast and do at least two western hunts a year. FWIW I went with the 8x32 NLs and have no regrets. They go with me whenever I’m going to be outside. My advice would be get the bino that you will have no excuse not to pull out of the harness or leave in the truck.

I did this same exercise this spring. I went to the store fully intending to buy the 8s. I looked through both for quite some time at dusk and ended up walking away with 10s. The 8s were phenomenal, but the field of view is so wide with all of the NLs that I felt the 10s have most of the advantages of "regular" 8s, but were still 10s (if that makes any sense). I don't think you can go wrong. I think this is the definition of a "first world problem."
I used a similar thought process to pick the 12s over the 10s. Same FOV as my previous 10x42 ELs and better magnification.

I just recently got the NL Pure 10x. I justified the 10s since I already have a Meostar 15x56 Plus that I'm happy with and two lower power binos that I really like (Blaser Primus 8x42 and Meostar 7x42). I was running the Meostar 10x42 HD and felt that was the category to get the best of the best glass as it seems like the further the distance, the more difference you see between good and great glass. Plus the NL 10s had a similar FOV to my 7x and 8x binos.

The NL Pure 10x lives up to most of the hype although to my eyes the 10x 42 HD Meostars handle the sun glare coming through the trees a little better than the NLs. But the ergonomics, FOV, image brightness, and glass clarity of the NLs make the 10x the top pick out of any bino I have tried. Since I use 7x and 8x in deep woods due to their depth of view, the massive FOV of the NL 8x is not necessary for me and one nitpick about the NLs is that even with the adjustable eye cups, they take a little more careful eye placement than some other binos so for a close-in woods bino, I am happy to stay with the 7x Meostars and 8x Blaser that require no careful eye placement, you just jump on the image as soon as you bring the bino up to your face.

I bought the Forehead Rest for the NL and for me it makes a huge difference. With the forehead rest I can hand hold the NL 10s as still as my Meostar 7x.

I currently have a set of EL 8.5x42's and I'm planning on getting a set of the Swaro Pures but can't decide between the 8's and 10's. I was leaning more toward the 8's but now I'm back to 50/50 or maybe even ever so slightly leaning toward the 10's. And that all changed in the last 10 minutes. Jeezus, I feel like my wife picking out fricking shoes.

Stay with the EL 8.5 (assuming its the SV) - best of both worlds. Exit pupil of the 8NL and FOV of the 10NL and it has pretty OK glare management. A true all rounder
