I am currently in the beginning stages of slowly hunt planning for the 2028 fall season. The main purpose of this hunt is a diy elk tag for one of my good friends - it will be his only time he ever gets to do a western hunt in his lifetime. He will be 70 that year, and me 31. I want elk to be the main focus for him. I will be in the thorofare the following year so won’t burn my points. He Weill have 5 elk points going into the app and me 5 deer points. What I am getting to is it worth me burning my points to try and hunt an overlapping season when it sounds like October deer is tough. Or just go hunt? We both will apply in the special. If this is a redundant question I’m sorry but just trying to plan this out the best I can. I recommended he go outfitted with me since it is once In a lifetime, but he doesn’t want to spend the money which I understand. Hypothetically let’s say we are hunting together is it best to focus on just one species? If we are hunting separate then we can focus individually in both

Regarding my deer I have also talked with Josh Martoglio of trails west and if I don’t burn my points I will go with him on a deer hunt is my other option.

If it doesn’t put you in the poor house, and you guys have time to deal with two animals, I would get a tag personally. You never know what you might run into and you might also tag out with an elk on day 1 and wish you had more things to hunt. Worst case scenario you don’t see any nice bucks…if you can put your buddy “first” and not be too hung up on finding a deer I’d say why not

At the time of the hunt I will have three elk hunts and one mule deer hunt under my belt. 1 September elk hunts, two November elk hunts, and one November deer hunt though none of those will be diy.

Cow tag isn’t a bad option.

When the time comes I planned on 14 total days including travel so I hope 10 days minimum of hunting. I will be the only one with any prior experience. I don’t know if I’d be able to fall scout but if we come up with a plan go out in the spring snag a bear tag and at least see what the terrain is like.

There are only a handful of western units with overlapping seasons (late sept) without jumping east to the bighorns and the southern central part of the state

I have pretty much decided to focus on just elk, I will try and get a cow tag assuming they are pretty much a guarantee.
I will go with trails west next year in the wilderness camp for September deer.
