Looking for a gunsmith/machinist who can modify a pic rail for me.

Has anybody ever sent out a pic rail to get material removed? I have a warne mountain tech rail for my Kimber 8400 300wm and I’d like to get a chunk killed out of it to open up the ejection/loading area.

Does anybody have a recommendation for a place to send this to?

Thanks!

I had one that hung over the barrel more than I liked or needed and I just cut it off with a hacksaw.
I’m half tempted to just cut the whole center section out myself.

I’d still end up with a strong steel base and the scope rings I want to use. I can’t really see what would go wrong, I guess worst case I cut it wrong and I’m out 80 bucks.

I’ve dumped 80.00 down my throat before though and gotten nothing out of it too though so there’s worse things than messing up a rail.

Ya I’d just cut it if it was me, I don’t see how you could mess it up.
I’m with you on spending $80 on dumber stuff before.

I'm considering the same thing right now. My thought is that I'll bed the 1 piece rail with JB weld and then once everything is cured, remove the rail, cut out the middle section and then put the two perfectly matched bases back in place. I dont want to hijack your thread but what would others suggest to paint the cut/silver portion so that it's all black? Matte black spray paint?

Any local machinist should be able to do that for you pretty easy.

I personally just cut my own.

That ought to be easy, as you don't have a super specific size it needs cut to, etc. You could do it yourself and make it look professional. Got a drill press? You could mark it out in pencil, and drill a 3/16" or so hole at each back-corner to form the radiused inside corners of your cutout, then a series of holes to form the back of the cut. Put it in a bench vise and hacksaw through the remaining parts, and clean it up with a file, then 200-grit paper on a hard backer. Use 44-40 or aluminum black to color it.

I was thinking I’d just sort of buff out any tool marks from what I cut so at least it’s smooth and then forget about it. Not worry about the color.

Matte black will work fine. Mark it and use an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel if you don’t have access to a metal chop saw or bandsaw.
