Longest someone has applied for a Unit or hunt

38yrs
Nebraska Bull elk tag

Started applying the first year they offered them, 1987. Was a totally unweighted lottery then.
Pretty sure I have not missed a single application yet.

Preference point system started in 2014 (I believe). In my unit of choice, even with max points, my odds are slim to none.

But there is always hope !
2025 draw has not happened yet

I been applying for bison in Delta and bear on Kodiak since 1978. Never been drawn for either. In Alaska we don’t earn any type of points for years we apply, etc.
Everyone is equal every year. With the exception of non residents who always seem to get the best bear permits if they have to hire a guide to hunt them.

I'm at 19 or 20 myself. I would expect you to draw soon with the way Oklahoma separated the elk draw into two groups.
Folks with 20+ points are put into a separate draw with the purpose of trying to get those guys drawn before they get to old.
At least that's the way I understand it.
Yep, 50% of the tags go to 20+ point holders. I'm only 57, so I have time. I actually thought I might have hit this year when I saw the CC charge, but I only drew a prime rut hunt at McAlester, so not suffering this year....lol.

Wish I had known I could hunt Fort Sill when I was active duty back in the day. I'd have flown back to hunt if it were me nowadays, or did my 20 so I could now....lol.

I also be curious to know how much money you've all spent on applying all these years? I would love to hunt Moose in Colorado someday but wondering if its worth the time/money applying every year or just pay to go to Canada...... i know its been discussed many times over

Arizona: 12 years for turkey, 16 years for pronghorn, 14 years for bighorn, 12 years for bison.

At some point I will draw a Goulds tag, I may draw a pronghorn tag and the other two are my annual donations of $13 each so someone else can hunt them.

But you can't win it if you're not in it.

Wow. I am amazed by some of these wait times.
Imagine investing that time and money. Now imagine a bunch of whiney hunters that cry "it's not fair". Then see your decades of time, money, and discipline be wiped away all because of some entitled brats.

Rant over.

Since we are Ranting.....grin

I think it's fine to wait years for a tag....if you know what you are getting yourself into. The problem with some of these states is they change the rules years down the line after one has many years of application fees invested.

Nevada has become a terrible state to apply in as a non res. Their system of squaring your points sounded good in the beginning...but now with hundreds of thousands of applicants also squaring their points....and less tags for non res....the good units have become an extreme longshot.

Arizona cut the tags in half for non res about 11 years ago which made the already crazy point creep accelerate and increasing the time it would take to draw a non res tag. It had to, they just don't offer enough tags to run the non res through.

Now-a-days a non res guy should know what he is up against with all of the internet info out there- including this thread here on Rokslide.

Right now it's about 18 years for a non res to draw an Elk tag in Unit 1 AZ, count on that being about 30 years or more if you are starting now.

Starting now for NV elk, A 30 yr old guy just might die on the list if waiting for a good unit in NV- it's that bad.

Now watch, the one in 200,000 guy that drew an elk tag with 2 points will chime in claiming I'm wrong
<Face Palm>

I worked with a man who has killed two Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, both in Wyoming. He's the only person I know who has drawn two Bighorn tags and killed two Bighorns in Wyoming. He waited 32 years between kills. He killed his first one at 18 as an NR and his second one at 50 as a resident. I don't know if he was putting in every year or racking up preference points for part of that time.

I struggle with thoughts of what my young son will ever have for hunting opportunities. He won’t be buying any point for 6-8 years depending on the state. I’d love to zero myself out in a couple states in the next couple years and start over with full intentions of splitting my points with him some day in the future

I think we might see a little bit of change to the point situation as the baby boomer generation ages out but realistically it probably won’t be super noticeable

Not nearly as long as others on here but I have gone 11 years waiting for a tag that’s 50% odds second choice. If my math is correct, Iv been more likely to draw a sheep tag than to not draw this tag
