I'll have to go ahead and respectfully disagree with you. The 338 Win is much more than a 350 yd cartridge. I wont post up a bunch of comparative drop charts to make a point, but pick a few of the decent BC. 338 bullets and run them through your app or program. You'll see that it compares favorably with 300 mags.

I know it can be argued that energy isn't necessarily lethality, but it's no trick to get a 225 grn @ 2800 that'll still have 2k of energy at 500 yds.

+1
I got the 230gr ELD-X and 225gr accubond over 2900fps with a stout load of R23 in my 338WM. 225 Accobonds shot better.

🍿from my research… the 338WM is very similar to the 300WM

Funny how a 338 is a short range cartridge yet a 300 isn’t? I think a 338WM would be up to the task with practice.

No personal experience with the 6.5 prc but you should be gtg with it. Id just use a 147 eld and stack animals if it was me

Smart decision to move away from the 6.5 PRC for elk IMO. I have one in Proof Research and love it… for deer. Shot an elk last year with it at about 80 yards and was not impressed at all. The shot connected where it needed to (in the lungs): entry wound was no bigger than the nail on my pinky finger, no exit wound. (This was with factory Hornady 143gr ELDX Precision Hunter) No blood trail at all. We did eventually find the bull, but we were very lucky to hear him thrashing in some trees as he expired. If we hadn’t heard that, probably would have never found him. Switched to a 300 PRC this year and leave in 10 days for New Mexico. We’ll see how that does, but based on the holes in the paper target, I’m not worried a bit.

I might be a fan of the 338wm. Had one built up on a M70 back in 2005. Killed multiple bulls in the 500 yard range, might push to 600 with the right bullets. 600 is my self imposed limit for this rifle.

Shot 250gr accubonds for a while, then switched to 225gr TTSX. Spent a bunch of money on a Hart barrel, McMillin stock with bedding and action true up. I have a stack of 300’s…and with modern bullets in the 200+ range…the 338 travels less.

300PRC makes 600 pretty easy these days.
My $.02 anyway.
