Planning on a muzzleloader to be the next evolution of hunting for me but brand new to it. I have been following what arrowhead rifles has been doing for awhile but confused on what makes or brakes the ability for a muzzleloader to shoot long distance (300 to 400 yards) consistently? If possible at all? Is it the barrel, load, Etc?

If the shooter is capable, 400yds is a CHIP SHOT for a custom. We've been shooting 1,000yds in registered competitions and very well could be this summer shooting a mile.

NOTE THOUGH........... What we've been shooting isn't smokeless, but using BH209.

Custom muzzleloaders are not grandpa's muzzleloader. Most all will outshoot any CF if the shooter is capable.

Does it need to be a custom to get it done? Are there over the counter options?

FYI, many jurisdictions do not allow scopes for qualifying for Muzzleloader/Tags/Seasons.

So before buying a real fancy one, check if you can use a scope where you want to hunt, in case you haven't already.

Without a scope, eyesight may be a bigger limiting factory for real life accuracy than the gun, powder, or projectiles.

I know for me, I hunted muzzleloader deer in Nevada, and with my eyesight, I could only get consistent shots in an 8" circle at up to 125 yards with my CVA Accura LRX and the open sights it came with.

Allegedly, with a scope 300"yards shots can be made with the rifle I got, but without magnification my middle-aged eyes limit my range.

Note, fortunately, I did get a deer at 120 yards with it.

whether it’s rifles or muzzleloaders, many factors can come into play to create a high performing LR weapon.

In my experience a quality barrel, and efficient ignition are the foundation to these rifles.

Consistent load charges, and properly sized high BC bullets also play a vital roll.

I am running the new Remington ultimate muzzleloader this year and I took a deer with it at 408 yards. I am shooting 160 grains of BH209 powder and the new Parkers 300gr bullet. I have a 5.5-22x50 NXS scope on it that I had custom turret made for. According to Bob Parker, I should get expansion on that bullet out to abt 550 based on the ballistics chart. During testing of powder charges, I can tell you for 100% certain that the wind really blows that short fat bullet.

I cant speak for Arrowhead but I've heard nothing but good things. I'm shooting a Gunwerks MZ5 in .45 cal and it is an incredible weapon. I'm getting 2" groups with the Revic Exo sight. This was my first MZ and I kinda went all in. I am a real stickler for accuracy and this thing checks all the boxes. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about it.

What is the best .50 cal long range? I'd love a paramount but cant seem to find one anymore. Is the Remington UML pretty solid?

For the price, yes. You can either remain with the OEM ignition system, or improve it by going to the Arrowhead replacement.
Most are shooting 112grs weight of BH209 with the Fury 320gr bullet.

I would say the overall quality of the gun is much better on the Remington. Paired with the arrowhead ignition it’s a better gun than the paramount.

have set up many of them. 105gr by weight with a 320 fury. 112 is pretty hot for the ultimate. I tell guys 110 absolute max. It has a fairly thin barrel.

Direct from Western, prior to Hodgdon buying BH, you can't over charge the RUM. Now you can double load it and screw up, but BH will not over charge the RUM.
I have the email from Western........... 160grs VOLUME or 112grs WEIGHT. Any more than that and you won't burn all the propellant in the barrel.
Western tested both the RUM and UF rifles.

Glad you have the email 👍🏻 I’m speaking from my personal experience of setting up 50+ rums on blackhorn.

Yes sir. I was personal friends with Ken Johnston who invented the ignition system and sold the rights to Remington. I've built them and repaired them.

I communicated quite a bit with Don at Western about BH and charges. When Western tested the rifles, they concluded that 160grs volume or 112grs weight was what would burn in the barrel, and any more was just wasting propellant.
There are two FB pages relating to the rifles. There's a ton of owners who are shooting 112grs weight with the 320gr Fury. Accurate rifles.
