What equipment are you guys using to get your "In the field" calculations for long range shots while hunting, as far as distance, wind speed, angle, altitude, etc. Basically, what's your set up? Thanks in advance.

I use a Leica 1600-B for range (can also accurately read angle and atmospherics), an iPhone with BulletFlight (M) for angle and corrections with a Kestrel 3500 for atmospherics, and a Kestrel 4500AB for atmospherics and corrections. It all works very well, and I use one or the other programs depending on the situation. I'm in the process of shaking out the new Kestrel 5700 w/ LINK right now. Looks very promising.
It looks like they are phasing out the Kestrel 4500, although they are still available. In your opinion would the 5700 Elite w/ Link and AB be worth the extra money vs the 4500? I've been eying up that Leica 1600-B for a while now.
I really liked the 4500AB for the 6 or 7 months I used it last year. I'm really liking the K5700 Elite/LINK that I have now. The biggest upgrade for me is the connectivity to iOS. I can link my iPhone 6 to it and read live environmentals as well as control the AB solver. A simple swipe of the screen scrolls yardage. It's pretty cool! I'm working up an initial review now.
If you don't need or want that connectivity to an iOS or Android, the 4500AB is a sweet unit, and running about $100 cheaper than it was before the 5700 was released.
I wouldn't, I know that guyI ask Stefan.....
I am possibly looking to change over from my lieca to a Sig LRF if they are as good as I am hearing. We'll see.
Nice write-up, Jeff. I just ordered the Sig Kilo earlier today, so glad to read your glowing review after I had already ordered one. Looks like it will perform very well for the ranges I will most likely be shooting at. However, did you happen to test the angle comp on close ranges for archery purposes at all? I know.....you're an ELR guy, but who knows.
Does the booklet give a minimum angle comp range maybe? No big deal, I'll test it out when I get it. I currently use the Leica CRF 900 but mostly archery hunt. Wanted an extended range version for some rifle shooting, but if it does well at under 100 with angle comps that might be a big plus as well.
Thanks, again.
There will be a follow up review coming that will focus more on how to get the most out of this unit. I will get some angle data at that time too.
I went to the G7BR2 years ago and have not looked back. My time is cut i dramatically from when the intended target is found and the shot is fired. It has helped me kill animals I otherwise would have to let walk because I would be trying to get set up for a shot, ranging, getting DOPE and then trying to read the wind.
