Just realized the Montbell pants don't have side zips. Deal killer.

I picked up a pair of used Patagonia milsurp das pants off ebay a couple of weeks ago. Search under "patagonia mars" or "patagonia pcu" puff pants and they should come up. They're the exact same thing as their das pant only in olive. I paid $75 shipped, although a lot of the new, unused models were a bit more expensive. There were a lot of xl's last time I looked; I got a large to make sure I could throw them on over whatever I was wearing, but probably could have gotten away with a medium. Now my wife wants a pair, but smalls, xs, or even mediums are pretty rare.

I have some Atom LT pants that have been a staple for me. I had a pair of Mt. hardwear Compressor Pants prior to these. The compressor pant was great but just a little heavy for my style of backpack hunting. There are some features I find lacking on the Atom Lt's like double two way zippers on the side of the legs and a lightweight zip fly with snap button.

I heard there is a Kenai pant in the works from Kuiu. I'm holding off upgrading until I find something I really like. If the Atom LTs had two way zippers they would be a home run since a zip fly isnt totally necessary, just nice to have.

So far as light weight and packability, for a synthetic insulating layer, the Atom Lt pants are pretty hard to beat. The Atom LT will compress down smaller than a nalgene bottle if you have a string compression sack, impressive for a synthetic puffy layer.

Thanks for this tip, just nabbed a pair of these in xl for 82$ shipped. Can't wait to get them

I was thinking of doing a thread reviewing many of the new items I used this last fall, including my new puffy pants. I ended up going the thrifty route, and bought the LL Bean Primaloft pants (99 dollars if I recall) and absolutely loved them! They seem to be just the right warmth to bulk to weight ratio. I never needed them during archery season here in Montana as it was unseasonably warm, but having guided or hunted every day of the rifle season, I used them quite a bit. They were fantastic for cold rides packing up and down the trail, and not too hot for hiking on the real cold days. They also aren't too bulky under my Sitka, Kuiu, or even Wranglers. The only downside I found was no vents, and it would be nice to have side zips to be able to take them off with out removing my boots and outer layer, like my new Kuiu merino base layers do. I know you can get these in the more "high end" options, but your going to be paying double or triple the price. Not worth paying that for a little bit more convenience imo.
