I use Xero shoes as they are comfy and I only take one pair of shoes on my feet. My pair weighs 8.5 oz for A 9.5.

Astral Loyaks - super flexible and grippy and great for staking or water crossings, only 8 ounces.

For Backpacking I go with the Xero Shoes - Z-Trek. They are pricy but durable and pack flat. I wear them for water crossings and as camp shoes, when its colder I simply put on a heavier merino sock to keep my feet warm. They are also sturdy enough to hike on trail with if you have a bunch of crossings planned in a row.

I run the walmart croc knock-offs for boating, beach, and yard work.

A Bougainvillea thorn will go thru, so I expect cactus would.

These shoes are fantastic for wet water wading. I use them trout fishing. They do dry out quick.
