Lighter recoiling elk rifle

Forgot to mention he doesn't reload so he'd be using factory loads. Id guess his 270 is between 9-10 lbs. And his current rifles are not threaded and he wants a suppressor. And I think he just wants a new toy. Haha. He has a 243 but I think it's a bit light for elk. I was thinking about a 7mm-08 but having not shot one I wasn't sure. Thanks for the help so far guys
Another vote here for a 7mm-08. I’d consider myself recoil sensitive and have no issues with that cartridge. One thing to keep in mind is that stock design can make a big impact on felt recoil. Even some of the bigger rounds mentioned can be a pleasure to shoot with a good stock, but with the wrong stock they can be a lot harder to handle.

My father just did the same thing, after having both shoulders rebuilt his 300 mag wast too much to take, he landed on a winchester xpr sr in 308 win, topped with a trijicon huron 2.5-10 and a otter creek polonium30 suppressor, 9lbs all in

It's all relative, but my 300WM suppressed is very manageable on recoil. My 6.5CM suppressed is basically recoilless. Also could look at an AR-10 in .308. It suppressed would be smooth too.
Problem with an AR-10 in .308 or 6.5cm, they all are heavy, I’d never hunt with mine when I can take a lighter rifle.

I’d suggest 6.5 cm if you reload and can load it for the heaviest bullet and he only takes perfect shots, otherwise I’d go with a .308 and still reload and get some 215’s slinging at slower speeds and limit range.

Factory ammo I think both 6.5cm and .308 feel the same recoil wise.

I like my 6.5cm but can’t see ever using it on elk while I have a 30 cal.

My dad is looking to get a new rifle for elk. He's in his seventies now and would like a rifle/cartridge that is lighter recoiling but still good on elk. To give a bit of context he can shoot a .270 fine but a 30-06 is too much. He's looking for a couple things:
-Lighter on recoil
-Not too heavy so he can still carry it in the mountains
-threaded so he can use a suppressor.
Any suggestions would be great. Thanks guys
6CM would be my first choice, my second would probably be 6MM ARC, and my third would be a 6.5 PRC.

I’ve been helping my pops with the same thing. 7 mag guy since he bought the first one. He saw my bulls I killed with my 6.5prc and I forced him to carry it on our last elk hunt together. He shot a cow with it at 508 yards. It’s a savage ultralight 110 and weighs right about 7 pounds loaded. Threaded for a suppressor, but a muzzle-brake is rocksett on it until I take it to the gunsmith. The action is a bit sloppy and clunky (but functional) and that’s my only complaint. That rifle has killed 3 bulls and his cow, and I don’t remember how many deer. He has converted his deer hunting to a 6.5 creedmoor and when he is ready for “a new elk rifle” I don’t think he would be hard to convince the 6.5prc is the way to go. It has enough “knockdown power and energy” to calm his mind, it’s light enough to keep him going, and with the lack of recoil, he can still go hunting. That’s all that matters.

If he already has a 270 then just keep using that.
If he wants a new rifle a few people on this forum have shot elk with a 22 creed. @mxgsfmdpx killed a moose with one this year. You can have a tikka 22-250 1-8” punched out to 22 creed
22 Creedmoor has been excellent so far. Three 1 shot kills on big game so far in 2024. Looking foreword to more kills coming up as the fall and winter roll on.

Thanks for the help guys. One question: why the 6cm over the 6.5 cm? They seem similar, u just have the possibility of using heavier bullets with the 6.5. Thanks again guys

If he can handle a .270 then a 6.5 PRC would be a breeze with a brake or supressor!
Tikka or Browning XBolt would be amazing
6.5 prc with suppressor is perfect. My Fierce weighs 5.3 lbs naked add a scope of your choice and a 11-13 oz suppressor and your off to the races.

A lot of people have already said it, but 6.5CM suppressed is a solid choice. For context, my eight year old has shot my Bergara MgLite without issue, and my 12 year old loves it.

My opinion is tikka 6.5cm is probably the easiest easy button.
Good quality light weight rifle. Good factory ammo. Both are easy to get at the store. It’ll seem like a kitten compared to what he’s used to shooting.
We’ve killed lots of deer and elk with 6.5cm no issues at all.
