Surprised no mentions of the Wichester (Browning) model 71 in .348 Win. That was a thumper and they are one of the most well made and finished of the lot.

Can't go wrong with the 30-30 for over-all performance. The 44 Mag rifle is nothing more than an extension of the performance of the 44 magnum hand guns. For that purpose, would rather have a 45-70 guide rifle or even a .444
You can certainly shoot 44 Special in the 44 Mag but the cost is not much different.
However, for plinking.....better off getting what ammo cost less, if you can even find it. Probably a .357 Magnum and shoot 38 specials.

I have several lever guns and really enjoy shooting them. This one I bought recently, it’s a Uberti 1894 in 38-55. Awesome gun

Second this. .357 mag out of a lever gun improves ballistically to be within the ballpark of .30-30. If you can find a Winchester '94 Trapper, they are sweet little rifles... compact, handy, cheap to shoot, have virtually no recoil and are quiet enough they sound almost like they're suppressed. I have actually never killed a Whitetail buck in my home state of VA that I couldn't have used my Trapper for.

I really like the pistol caliber Win Model 94 Trapper models. I have them in 357, 44mag, and I just aquired this most recent 45LC. Mine are all the newer crossbolt safety version so they aren't anything super special. For all around fun plinking on the cheap with a lever gun I love my Win 9422. When I was a kid in HS I had a Win 9422mag but some asshole stole that one.

I personally hate the look of the 94s....I know I know they are "iconic" and here in MN a TON of guys rock them ore did in 30-30. I think they look generic.

I'd go with an older model 99 or a 1873

Ahh man that's like saying you hate John Wayne, apple pie, and cheeseburgers. LOL

Nah, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We all like what we like for whatever reason/s and there is no wrong answer. That's what makes our country so great, the freedom to choose.

Personally I would support a company thats still in business, Henry or Browning. Ruger bought Marlin but until they have been manufacturing them for awhile I would prefer to wait a bit.

Marlin 39a .22 Octagon- my grandfather's rifle.

Winchester 94 Antique Saddle Ring mid 60s - one of my Dad's many 30-30 lever guns and one of my favorites next to his 94ar big loop.

Marlin 336 30-30 - my go to brush hog and truck gun for many years. Mini 14 bumped the 336 out of truck gun duty.

Browning BLR LW 81 .243 - my wife's new rifle and greater shooter. (the rifle not the wife)

I have had a Marlin 1895 45-70 for awhile now on my wish list but another bolt action will likely edge it out next time.

A cheap Marlin 336 in 30-30. Ammo is cheap and the cartridge is a good hunter with an MPBR of 180yds.

The 45-70 is fun, but ammo is ridiculous unless you reload.

I have my great grabdpa’s Marlin model 93 in 30-30 that I just got running again for this season. Hard to beat Marlin’s but there is a lot of good info in this thread. I’m still looking for .357, 45-70, 300 savage and a blr. My FIL has a blr in 30-06 that is fun to shoot and his ubertis are sweet shooters too

Ruh Roh, I thought I already had an account, I guess I did confuse myself. Mods, if this needs to be addressed......
