Lever Action Hunters

I really wanted to find a factory bolt peep for my 348win but they're so expensive! I opted for a Skinner peep because there are already a bunch of holes in the frame from a previously installed Marbles offset scope bracket, and I really like its minimal design and profile (clean sides).

I am very fond of levers and have decided I want to hunt more with iron sights since other than varmints I haven't shot any game beyond 180 yards in my home province. A .30-30 could certainly handle anything I am likely to do around home unless I draw a moose tag.
Not a real big fan of leverevolution at least the typical lead core stuff. Performance under 100 yards was meh, exits were not common.

If anyone got onna them 16" laminated lever bois, I got onna them MAGA 2020 stimulus checks 💸

2 buds and i got marlins in 45-70 about 4 years ago for the ohio straight wall deer season. all three shoot and function flawlessly.

for accuracy, all of them like 300 gr hp and none like the leverevolution.

i am trying the 250 gr monoflex in mine and like it so far for lack of recoil but the 250 gr only has 2 deer to its credit so it has a ways to go to prove itself. the rifle has become my woods gun for sure.

I love my Marlin 336 in 30-30. Good reliable gun that works perfect for the big woods and brushy farm ground that I hunt. I would say that more than 50% of the deer rifles that go into the woods here locally are Marlin 30-30s. Shoots Remington Core-lokts pretty well. I tried the leverevolution this year and I couldn’t get it to group tighter than like 4 inches at 100. Switched back to the cheap stuff and it went right back to around an inch.

My favorite levergun is my Winchester 1895SRC in .30-06. It shoots great with 180 or 220 grin RN. I've got a reproduction Lymn 21 sight for it but havent gotten round to mounting it yet.

Just a few of my other levers:

Hi all, first post I recently found this site. JM Marlin 45 70, 400 gr cast bullet at 1765 fps. Wheel weight alloy hand load for the bull elk. Took 2 mule deer bucks and a cow elk with this set up. Four horn ram, doe antelope, black bear, mule deer buck and two hogs 300 gr Barnes X bullet at 2020 fps. Cast bullets make nice holes. John

Awesome thread!! I took my brothers 30-30 out and shot a doe two seasons ago. Was a pretty cool experience. Pretty sure I would see the bullet the entire time it left the gun to when it hit her lol

The old 30-30 has a lot of smack at 100 yards - more than its numbers on paper might suggest, at least in my experience. The moderate speed pairs perfectly with traditional cup and core bullets like old Winchester Silvertips and Remington Corloks. Really knocks deer over in my experience with a typical 1.5-2 inch exit. My favorite are the 170 grain Silvertips, great performance and look cool!

I love my levers! I have marlins in many calibers. As I enjoy open country hunting more than the thick stuff my levers dont get a lot of use. But, when conditions are good for them you cant beat the feel of a levergun in hand. I run quick detach scopes backed up by peep sites on a couple of them. I do have a long range levergun too! My 325 BLR has taken game out to 400 yards. I just re-scoped it and hope to stretch my range to 600 with it.

My dad had a Browning BLR in a 308 from the early 80's. I am in the process of cleaning it up and putting one of my old Leupold scopes on it and I am going to give it to my oldest son this year. He is left handed and it will be a nice hunting rifle for him with a bit of family history. It needs to get into the woods again.

I also just put a scope on a Henry 45-70 that I am putting together for spring bear and deer hunting in Iowa, when I draw a tag. I just put an older VXIII Leupold 2.5 x 8 on it.
