You could probably get away without one but they are very helpful. I shot off a cheaper vortex tripod and did fine. You dont need a really expensive one just to have fun.

I think it depends on the match. You certainly need a way to shoot above knee to thigh high obstructions at many venues. Some it’s once or twice. Some it’s every stage. Really depends on venue and match director. You could use wiser quick stix for example but you certainly need a way to get your gun up off the ground.
