I am curious to hear what everyone’s top pick for places to live for big game hunting opportunities. Can either be a state or a province!

If you are just talking hunting opportunities and leaving all the other crap (politics, cost of living, etc.) out of it, then Alberta would be my choice. Everything from upland birds to elk and moose. Alaska would be a close second.

That’s interesting to hear, I lived in Alberta for a few years. The entire province only holds less then 35,000 elk and success rates are low usually 5-10% for bulls. There is alot of moose not much trophy bulls though.

Also the OTC sheep tag success rate is less then 2% for residents

My grandfather was a strong advocate for New Mexico as an elk and mule deer state although he didn't hunt for trophies. Kansas has been great to me for deer but very limited for anything larger than that.

I don't live there, but for lower 48, it seems like Wyoming would be hard to beat. General tags for residents, 75% of tags on limited draws, more exclusive access to wilderness areas, low population of residents and a wide array of animals to pursue.

This is all from the outside looking in.

Big game or elk?

Want guaranteed tags? Southeast wins. Public land access is slim.

Elk? Colorado has the most.

Alaska would be at the top of my list if the logistics for most good hunting wasn't so difficult or expensive.

Wyoming takes the cake for me

But I live in Oklahoma and try to persuade my wife to move to WY every single day.

If you figure out how to get your wife talked in to that move, please let me know. I've been working on the same move for years.

I definitely agree with these points, Alaska would be great but the logistics just to go hunt seem extreme.

Any particular area in Wyoming?

Same. Lots of cool opportunities here, but the logistics are definitely a hurdle. From a hunting standpoint, I should have never left Wyoming to move to AK.

That is a tough one to beat. Not much elk hunting through and brutal winters I hear

You can hunt elk OTC every year.

You need a boat or a plane. A good boat that will get you into PWS for more fish that you can eat, deer, goats and black bears is in the 50-70k range(and up if you want it to).
A plane that will get you into sheep, carribou, moose, deer, goat, elk, bears starts about 45k and can go way up depending on what you want, but doesn't have to.

Most people own 50-80k trucks that are largely unnecessary. If you can afford a newer truck you can afford the boat or plane to do the hunting, but it's about priorities. You might not be able to have a new truck AND a boat or plane. A perfectly functioning older truck works well. And then you can hunt all those things OTC every year.

People overestimate the costs of things because they see the people with the best stuff and think you need that. You don't.

For many people a truck is a necessity. And new ones are tax deductible.

Boats and planes aren't either.

It’s Alaska. I can hunt anything. All I need is more time than I have. I use a fancy Kaboat that cost me $4k as it sits and I can access any animal I want to hunt with that set up.

Only problem? Short hunting season.

That’s awesome, that’ll get you into some decent sheep areas?

Can Alaskan residents get basic a tag for any big game in the state, every year?
