I am looking into potentially getting one of these rangefinders. What can you guys speak to as far as the reliability and the accuracy of the onboard ballistics. I see the 2800 caps at 1000 yard solutions without an external device. Does the 3500 also cap out at 1000?

I've been using Leica Geovids HD-B which basically use the same ABC system as the rangefinders you mentioned. I have ballistic curves for 7mm Rem Mag, .300 PRC, and .338 Lapua and all seem to be accurate out to 1000 yards at the range. I personally don't want to shoot at animals at 1000 yards so the limitation is not an issue for me.

After getting the load data set up for a rifle I would validate by shooting at 600+ yards. If impact was high or low, I would adjust velocity up or down by 25 fps until the solution matched the impact.

I got my Lieca 2800.com on black friday deal. I've been playing with it and setting up my curves but haven't had any significant field use.

Any solver will need trued. Here is a comparison between the Leica ballistics (in the Leica app) and Hornady 4DOF App (which I have been using with good success, and had good correlation with applied ballistics kestrel). I am presenting these in inches because there are no options for output in the Leica app other than selecting english or si units (?!?!?!).

500 yards:
Hornady: 49"
Leica: 49"

1000 yards:
Hornady: 367"
Leica: 359"

That is the table in the app. It's my understanding is that the "raw curve" gets sent to the LRF and then it uses the angle, temp, and pressure sensors in the LRF to adjust the curve and calculate your solution. In the LRF your solution can be displayed in "Clicks" of: 1 MOA, 1/4 moa, 1/3 moa, 10mm, or 5mm, or holdover in inches or cm.

I am hoping/assuming since it is presented as "clicks" that the "10mm" is actually 1/10th milliradian but the manual simply says "10 millimeters".

I bought the 2800.com and got rid of it as fast as I could. Setting it up was a nightmare for me, I’m not sure why it has to be so difficult with some of these new programmable optics. It was a joke, when I finally did get it programmed I was dismayed to find it consistently read 1.3-1.7 moa off what my ballistics actually should be. I tried to “fool” it by reprogramming it but was just too difficult. I took it back and picked up the Swarovski EL range and never looked back, can program them in 30 seconds and they’re accurate. Just my experience.

Mine was very close to kestrel out to 1000 yards when setup properly though. So it is accurate.

I tend to think you still had an error in setup. Which is understandable, it's not intuitive and the manual that comes with it sucks. I downloaded a manual online and it is more detailed.

One odd thing is, after programming your curve to the LRF, you still have to set your zero distance on the LRF.

Yeah probably, I get frustrated easily, I did spend hours working with it.

Now the EL range was so easy it was stupid, why can’t they all be like that 😊

I'm in the same boat. I bought it as a Christmas present to me from my wife. I got it and tried it, and I'm in WAY over my head with it. I'm sure there's a lot of good features to it, but it's much more than I need. I'm going to put it up for sale and find a regular run of the mill rangefinder.

If you want help setting it up I'd be willing. I think I've got a decent handle on it now.

The setup is the difficult part. Once you get it set up, it's simple to use - the same as a regular RF. I think it's quite nice to range and immediately have your DOPE, rather than consulting a kestrel or range card.

EDIT: I can do a step-by-step "How-To" if it would be helpful to anyone.

I will try and stick some pages from a pdf up here that Leica set me that has more details than what is in the manual for the 3500.com. It was helpful for me, am sure it will help others, why they don't have it included with the unit is beyond me.

The latest version available in App Store is 1.5.14 that has not been updated for more than a year and is terrible. Is there a some special way to get the 2.0?

Paired to the Kestrel with AB, you don’t have to reference the Kestrel necessarily to get elevation solution. The Leica CRF 3500.com will display the Kestrel AB solution in the viewfinder by alternating range and elevation solution (I did this just this am…took atmospherics reading from Kestrel, then ranged different targets).

If you carry the Kestrel (keeping it On) and just update atmospherics occasionally, you’d just have to apply your own wind call. (Just make sure you aren’t keeping atmospherics “live” or you’ll deplete battery pretty quick and potentially contaminate the data with body temp or baking in sun.)

If you have time, you can update atmospherics and wind AFTER lasing and reference the updated ballistic solution on the Kestrel.

I wish the Leica CRF 3500.com used Applied Ballistics like the Kestrel, Vortex Fury HD 5000 AB, and the Geovid Pro. For long range, I trust AB solution over the Leica ballistic solution.

I just picked up 8x32 Geovid Pro…I wanted to get away from carrying both binoculars and LRF. Had both at range this am…seemed to me the CRF 3500.com has better laser than Geovids (faster ranging solution)…I haven’t cross referenced the specs yet.

I looked up the laser specs between CRF 3500.com and Geovid Pro…

3500.com is a Class 3R laser (borderline eye safe).

Geovid Pros are Class 1 laser (completely eye safe).

I couldn’t find specs on Fury HD 5000 AB
