Hi all.

Helping out an elderly friend here. If you've never heard the story, I'll post a short version below but "Lee's Meat Buck" refers to an article back in the day by Kirt Darner on the story behind a buck he inherited from his life-long friend Lee Spurgeon. The buck was an official World Record contender as measured by respected B&C scorer Rusty Hall (editor of the former Trophy Hunter Magazine). Kirt is a friend of mine, but I understand the controversy surrounding his name back in the day. All I can say is he's served his debt to society and long put all that behind him. He just needs some help getting these reproduction antlers out there and I want to help him, much like he's helpe me over the decades.

Below is everything he sent me. If you have any questions or want to order a set of a very unique deer (1 in millions and millions), you can email Kirt at the email below. I'm happy to answer any questions too, but I only really know what's been posted below. Obviously, I wouldn't be helping him if I didn't trust that the buyer will receive the antlers.

Even if you're not in the market for set of these "repro's", check out that score sheet.

There may never be another one like it (but we can hope!)

The Spurgeon Buck

History

October 1966 in Colorado was a special hunting season. The extraordinary buck known as the “Spurgeon Buck” was harvested by Lee Spurgeon. Little did he know at the time how well known the buck would become.

Lee Spurgeon was a very good family friend as he and my father were close in age. As many men in that era, he was a hard-working manly man. His main work was construction, building and remodeling whatever you might want. He mainly hunted to put meat on the table and was unconcerned about the size of antlers and “That Davey Crockett” stuff!!

Lee grew older and had a couple of strokes that sadly sent him to his permanent hunting grounds. He knew how much I loved to Mule Deer hunt and gifted his amazing buck to me. I was so proud to have it and wanted more people to know and appreciate it. Knowing something about the “Davey Crockett “ stuff, I knew the buck had the potential to be the new world record typical. I contacted Rusty Hall an official measurer with Boone and Crockett to have it scored. On August 6, 1999 he scored the buck at 229 7/8 which did indeed make it the new world record. September 1, 1999, I also had it scored by an official scorer with Safari Club International, David Knight. Their scoring system is a bit different and the total of 234 2/8 was a bit more than B&C. The measurements of the tines, however were very close to each other. How ironic that I’ve been hunting mule deer my whole life and my best buck was given to me.

Boone and Crocket would not enter the buck under my name and SCI wouldn’t enter it as Lee was never a member of their club.

And then!!!! In 2016 the mounted buck took a tragic fall and broke his G2! It was repaired and I still hoped that it would be recognized in B&C as the great buck it is but they deny it because of the repaired break.

In hopes of being able to share this tremendous buck with other hunters, I’ve decided to offer replicas of the buck’s antlers. They will be produced as needed so I will take orders and deposits for them.

$4500.00 FOB Delta, Colorado total price with a 50% deposit. We have priced crating and shipping them and it will around 7 to 9 hundred to ship them UPS.

Robby, if you ever get the chance, it’d be worth the trip for you to take a Trip to Daryl’s shop. He has to have one of the top 3 Mule deer collections in the world! It’d be worth the trip just to be Daryl, to say he’s a hoot is a understatement!

sure! What's it called and where is it at?

Just spent the last hour going down the Darner rabbit hole...

That buck is incredible and I can only imagine what it looks like in person!

Once in many, many lifetimes buck! Thanks for sharing this.
it's kinda funny to me. When I very first saw the buck in person back in the mid-90s, my first thought was "that buck's a WR contender?"

But then when I really handled it and took a hard look, I realized that it had everything it needed and nothing it didn't--LONG even points, G3 forking close to the beam, giant MBs, and so dang even (less than 4" deductions across nearly 230"--less than 2%) zero non-typical points (I think the Burris buck has one if I remember right) and what's not immediatly noticeable: how big his H measurements are.

Even when I see the picture on here I still have to think it through to see how big it really is.

I find the lack of a like button here pretty unfortunate. It's making me think how great it would be to see stories of deer like this in the Mule Deer section.

I hope this post gets some business for your friend though. That's one amazing buck.

Great buck! Almost 30” mainbeams 😍😍😍
Incredible but I think that was one measurement that the Burris buck beat the Spurgeon buck. I think it had at least one main bean over 30”! Anyone can correct me if I’m wrong please.

yep the Burris buck has a main beam of 30 1/8”

The biggest typical buck I ever saw I was lucky enough to pick up one of his sheds after watching him all winter. He unfortunately broke off his eyeguard that winter which was 3” matching his other side. He scored 97 broken. His main beams were 26” long which was well above average for the bucks in that area. Someone else found the other side so sadly the set lives apart. 🙁. I reached out years later seeing if he was interested in getting reproductions made but he sold all his antlers for cheap to pay for a drug habit. No idea where it ended up.

Tried finding the buck during the summer to hunt that fall. Years later found out he spent the summer and fall in Idaho, but wintered in WY.

Love big typicals!!!
