Never found the buck but after lots of searching and several more days in the area I think all the folks who suggested it was a briscut shot are probably right.

Good on you for putting in the effort to find it again and/or find the body. Lesser folks would just go "meh, didn't get that one" after about 30 mins of looking, and move on to shoot (or shoot at) some other deer. Kudos.
