Leave Colorado for Utah??

Well, I accepted the job and moved the family out at the end of May. We rented a place in Cottonwood Heights and have started to settle in. It was a tough decision to leave Colorado; I think the mountains there are very hard to beat and probably the access to OTC elk hunting. Yet, the economy is better in Utah, and the cost of living is far less. Consider this: in Colorado I paid $1500/month for a two bedroom townhouse; in Utah i pay $1500/month for a 4 bedroom house with a yard, and child care is about half the cost ($2400/month vs. $1300/month).

I'll be heading back to CO for archery elk in September and maybe every year, since archery elk in UT starts around mid-August. From the few day trips I've made into the Wasatch and Uinta mountains, there appears to be good access to national forest and other public lands. There's definitely less OTC-any-bull units in Utah than Colorado, but there seems to be enough.

One question I have for the Utah residents is where is a good archery range in the Salt Lake region? The Lee Kay Center on the west side looks promising, but I'd like to find a closer range for the evenings. Thanks!

Hear you about the housing in Colorado watched my rent triple in 5 years in denver, my salary sure didn't. Caused me to move to the burbs. Hopefully the housing market does some correction.

Wild arrow archery has a range but it's probably farther from you than Lee Kay

Welcome to Utah. I live in south of you and not familiar with whats in Salt Lake for ranges. There is range up Squaw Peak in Provo canyon, but that is not that close to you.

Don't to it.

I can go to the store and buy a beer anytime I want in S. Utah.

Well, you can buy that watered down piss they try to pass off as beer here in Utah. You can't go into any place and just have a beer, you gotta have food with it. One of the stupidest things ever. That and a lot of places not able to pour the beer in front of you. WTF? Seriously? If you want to have to draw deer tags every year as a resident, go shoulder to shoulder with the crowds during rifle season, and deal with some of the general weirdness of Utah, then be my guest. I've been here a couple of years and I tolerate it, but there are far better options to consider.

Hey fltlndr,

we are on very similar paths. I moved to Ogden area about 2 months ago. Yes, housing is about the same as Phx but you get twice the house for the cost. And my childcare dropped from 2000 to 1300. I'm still pretty mixed on the area. I haven't found an archery range. I'm so surprised they don't have one around Ogden, at least I haven't found one yet. Also, they don't hardly do 3d shoots here. I was so frustrated when I went to the local archery shop and asked for the schedule and found out there area handful of 3d shoots and they are south and north of me but nothing local. Arg,..the kid behind the counter looked at me like "huh". I explained that 3d is where you take those 3d targets that he had on the indoor range and set up an outside course. He said "we don't do that in Utah". Just another strange thing about being on planet Utah. Since then I have found a few shoots but they are too far south.

I do love how the place shuts down on Sunday so if there is something you want to do that is normally busy you can.

There are a few archery ranges near you. There is Beehive Wasatch Bowhunters at the top of Parleys Canyon off of the lambs canyon exit, Timpangos archers at the mouth of Provo Canyon and stick flipper archery in Lehi. Back when I lived in Utah Beehive had a shoot every Friday evening that was open to the public. If I remember right it was $5 but women and children shot free and they always served a dinner at the range. If you become a member of stick flipper they give you a key to the gate so you can access it whenever you like.

What is your occupation?

I moved to the Ogden area like somebody else mentioned but I did it 4 years ago.A job presented itself and I took it.

I 2nd what others say about the wildlife management here. It is just stupid. However, I moved here from the Midwest to be in the mountains. City is great for the fam and I have access to three states within hours from my house. The general deer/elk hunting is crowded but so what!? I used to sit in a tree all day waiting for a deer.

Bottom line is this...I can transfer back to the Midwest any minute I want but the odds of that happening go lower every year.
