Lead free reloading- getting started

I have an old '40s vintage Savage 99 that was my first "deer rifle" my dad bought me back in high school. It's a sweet rifle that has sentimental value to me. I'd like to dust it off and whack a pig with it for old times sake. Problem is, the only ammo (.300 sav) I can find is lead. I need lead free. I need another hobby like I need a hole in my head and I won't shoot this thing much. Is there a very basic reloader that is inexpensive? What else to I need to get the job done? Don't ant to invest a lot of time or money in this.
 
Lee loader for it. Single cartridge loading kit you use without a press. It should do everything you need for an old model 99 savage. If not that you could find someone who loads and buy a lee die set and get them to make it for you. I would do it for you but shipping is a no go. I bet if you checked at a couple of gun shops they could help you find someone.
 
Lee reloading kit is about as inexpensive as it gets to get into reloading and you can make some fine ammo on it as long as you don't want to load big cases or volume. About $120 for the kit. Add a case lengt guage , pound of powder , 100 primers , and bullets. Primers and powder need to be bought locally to avoid hazmat shipping charges. Still going to be a little over $200 all in to do it this way.
 
Hmm, little more than I bargained for. I have a buddy who reloads, I'm just hesitant to shoot somebody else's reloads. Should I be?
 
If they haven't blown their own face off they are probably competent to make some ammo for your model 99. I would buy the dies , powder , bullets , and brass if you don't have any saved and sit down with them and watch them and learn a little. Most handloaders I know would be happy to help a guy out. Check with them and they may even hook you up with the powder and primers if you don't need a lot of ammo made. A die set is about $28 at midsouth shooters and some gmx bullets about $30 per 100. I haven't looked but I would bet that most 308 appropriate powders would work so the likelihood that your friends would have some powder that would work are high.

Good idea and I'm sure he would be glad to show me the ropes, but he lives 100 miles away. He shoots a 30-06 primarily so he would likely have some appropriate powder.

Trust me, nobody ever saved money reloading!!! We just shoot more. I am proof.
Truth is the last Barnes x bullets I bought were for my .358 Norma. Just the bullets were a hair over a buck a pop. Double Tap loads good ammo.
