im thinking about buying a first light uncompahgre set to layer under a solitude set for super cold hunts. so my layers would be base layer, pants, puffy then solitude. will that be too much bulk?

I use firstlite for cold hunts up north for whitetail.

Sanctuary jacket and bibs, furnace shirt and long johns, 800G insulated boots with thick merino socks, two pairs of gloves, balaclava and heavy trapper hat.

I was plenty warm in -30 with some light wind other than the icicles on my face and eyelashes.

uncomphagre is a good cold and a bit windy outer layer. For very cold you need a different outer layer which is designed for very cold....too much bulk is a no starter...for me.

Heated vest may be a good option and make sure you have dry socks on when you start your sit along with appropriate footwear/headgear-neck gaiter/gloves or hand warmer pocket. The length of sit will also determine what clothing you need. Healthy high fat snacks will also help keep you warm....nuts/nut butter, avocado and similar.

Obviously, you want to avoid sweating walking in.....be bold and start cold. I wear the minimal amount for the walk and pack the rest.

That is exactly what I do. Typically Kiln or furnace base layer.
When dragging a deer your going to want to remove at least the solitude and at times the puffys as well.

I chose the solitude in lieu of the sanctuary just for more versatility.

On the heals of zaps reply. I did buy a used heated pnuma vest but haven't had a chance to use it.
With the above system I can still shoot my compound but not my recurve.
It's definitely a challenge to avoid enough bulk to avoid the string but still stay warm at 10 degress

Yes- there are better outer layers

what outers would you look at

There are many even First Lite makes a warmer one, the Santuary. Mine, the old Solitude is not real wind proof I've read the new ones are which would be a lot better. Do a search its all here , real warmth and avoiding bulk is a challenge.

I think it depends where you hunt. I’m in SC. I hunt the midlands and mountains in SC. I’m going to run on my coldest sit the following. Aerowool boxers, 150 weight top and bottoms, kiln top and zip-off bottom, catalyst foundry pants, mountain hardwear Phantom puff jacket, Uncompaghre pants, the Klamath hoody over my grey puffy jacket, neck gaiter, beanie, touch gloves, and fingerless gloves over the touch gloves. I’ll take my rainsuit top and bottoms too.

Yes that’s going to be bulky. I run base layer, down pant/jacket, regular pant/jacket for wind.

i wear a sitka stratus (windproof which is key) and when needed (usually under 35 or so) a midweight mountain hardwear puffy underneath. when pulling a deer out, i'm more or less down to my baselayers lol. I used to have a fanatic but it was too bulky most of the time, and a good puffy with a windproof shell over top is warmer IMO (and probably cheaper).

Yes....1 too many layers IMO. 1. base layer, 2. decent insulating layer, 3. insulating and windbreaking layer (2nd and 3rd can be switched depending on how quiet the windbreak part is.

They key to minimizing bulk which sounds counter intuitive is to size up your outer layer. I am sure you have something around the house that could replicate the Uncompahgre and just try on the combo you are thinking. The right clothing is better than more clothing. I think most people put too much on and still get cold because of fit.

For true late season single digit and below type sitting I don't think anything beats good old wool with wind guard material. My percentages are just in theory but for late season cold sits...I want my outer layer to do 75% of the job my base layers to do 20% and the middle layer to help out a bit but basically be there so I can take off my outer layer walking in and out, drag out a deer, set the stand if hang and hunting, and most importantly I can strip my outer layer off for the truck ride home.

For stand hunting you really can't have to much bulk.
Not true in any sense...especially bow hunting.
