Hey guys,

Leaving for my first late season elk trip here in a few weeks. Haven’t done an elk hunt later than September in the past, so the whole low temp range and weather in November will be new to me for a hunt in the mountains. My question is when it comes to pants what’re you guys running for that 10-30 degree range when you’re hiking a couple miles in and a couple miles out each day? I’m hung up between buying some Kuiu Guide Pros to where over a base layer or running a base layer with attack pants I currently have and getting a Kuiu rain pant to run over it as a soft shell outer layer. The added rain pant sounds bulky but just trying to think minimalistic and what makes sense from guys who do this all the time. Thanks!

I’m pretty simple and don’t wear a base layer on my legs. My hunting that time of the year is all day hunts, so I’ll cover 4-6 miles each day. I have using a pair of Patagonia softshell pants with a built in boot gater. They are a bit heavier, but they deal with oak brush much better. If I get cold when I’m glassing, I’ll slip on a pair of puffy pants over the top.

I use the Sitka Mountain pants and Kuiu attacks in Mid to late November on Montana elk hunts. I wear base layers as needed. I also always have puffy pants with me.

I am heading out mid November and I usually wear softshell pants with a thin base layer, I hate getting to warm during the hike. This year I got a pair of the zip off base layers, going with no base layer in the morning while I hike, once I get to my spot I can throw on my base layer quick, if it is cold I have puffy pants as well. Bring a mat to sit on to eliminate the wet/cold ass. I also wear gators in the snow and have a pair of goretex pants if it gets nasty or I am taking care of an animal.

Kuiu attacks are often used without a baselayer or Big Bill wool pants again no baselayer. November for me can be rain at lower elevations and snow at higher. The Kuius dry fast which is nice for wetter conditions.

Last Oct I ran the First Lite Corrugate Foundry Pant with the First Lite Furnace Zip Off Boot Top during the cold mornings and pulled off the base layer as soon as I warmed up. The zipper vent on the side of the pants and the zip off boot top base layer is where its at! I intend to never go back.

I'm doing my first late season hunt this year too, so I picked up a pair of FL Catalyst Foundry Pants when they were on sale just in case this setup isn't warm enough.

I have used the Eddie Bauer fleeced line pants and they’re a great budget option. You can throw on a base layer underneath and stay very warm. The only downside is if you’re moving a lot you will sweat out. I tried the FL Corrugate Foundry pants this year and will most likely never go back to pants without side zippers. I would rather have the flexibility of adjusting the base layer warmth.

No expert on late season, I did a couple weeks in November in MT rifle. We are headed to late rifle in AZ this year though and I'm not changing much. I just used attacks with zip thermals and rain gear in MT. I'll have puffy pants this time for AZ and my kids have snow pants from a ski trip if they end up needing them. I have kuiu chuga rain pants now and used them recently. The ability to zip on/off rain paints is awesome! Up top, a synthetic base layer, shirt, hoody(kuiu 260), puffy and rain jacket.
