Hey guys,

Leaving for my first late season elk trip here in a few weeks. Haven’t done an elk hunt later than September in the past, so the whole low temp range and weather in November will be new to me for a hunt in the mountains. My question is when it comes to pants what’re you guys running for that 10-30 degree range when you’re hiking a couple miles in and a couple miles out each day? I’m hung up between buying some Kuiu Guide Pros to where over a base layer or running a base layer with attack pants I currently have and getting a Kuiu rain pant to run over it as a soft shell outer layer. The added rain pant sounds bulky but just trying to think minimalistic and what makes sense from guys who do this all the time. Thanks!

I’m pretty simple and don’t wear a base layer on my legs. My hunting that time of the year is all day hunts, so I’ll cover 4-6 miles each day. I have using a pair of Patagonia softshell pants with a built in boot gater. They are a bit heavier, but they deal with oak brush much better. If I get cold when I’m glassing, I’ll slip on a pair of puffy pants over the top.
