That's almost the only way to hunt anything in Texas without shelling out thousands of dollars.

As a new person with no points, this specific hunt has about a 0.00001% chance to draw due to how Texas squares points.

The hunts are amazing and cheap, I'm just salty. I've been putting in for 14 years and I've never drawn anything in Texas.
I’ve been applying since 2018 or so. So took me 6 years but I’ve drawn 2 archery Nilgai hunts back to back as well.

I killed 3 deer on Texas private lands last year and didn't pay a penny.

Not related to the landowner or anything like that. Don't even know the landowner where I killed the 2 does.

Yes, we had permission.

Just got my FOIA request for this year back from TPWD for number of applicants and point totals, etc. After crunching some numbers here's a little taste of the data from 3 of the areas I apply to every year. I'll list them at 1 point, my points, and max points.

1. Pronghorn
  • 643,797-1 odds at 1 point (0.00016%)
  • 191-1 odds at 15 points (0.52%)
  • 19-1 odds at 33 (max) points (5.3%)
2. Exotic at Caprock
  • 89,600-1 odds at 1 point (0.001%)
  • 33-1 odds at 14 points (4.9%)
  • 6-1 odds at 24 (max) points (15%)
3. Mule Deer at Caprock
  • 85,281-1 odds at 1 point (0.0012%)
  • 24-1 odds at 15 points (4%)
  • 17-1 odds at 17 (max) points (6%)

Did they give you a .csv or .xls of the data? What was the FOIA process like?

They send a .xlsx with a tidy list of whatever you asked for with an occasional redaction. They wouldn't give me Bighorn draw info this year, for example.

Process is very simple. I used to have to do a whole rigamarole with paperwork but they have a website now.

Search "TPWD Open Records Request" and it's the first thing that pops up.

Just be specific with what you're asking for and they'll give it up.
