I am not sure where you are going with this Bruce, but I only like to swing one way! ;)

Depends on the piece.

They all make some fantastic products and some not so fantastic... you don't get anything from matching every piece down to your socks unless you are getting paid to wear their gear so don't give any of them your unearned loyalty!

I will say that in my experience Kuiu and First Lite have the best base layers in merino with a slight edge towards Kuiu, Kuiu nails it on the insulation and Sitka kill the outer layer/shell game.

I noticed in some pics of my elk hunt last year that I was wearing at least one piece from pretty much EVERY big name gear maker.

..which was probably why I didn't kill anything. No self respecting elk would want to be seen in a grip and grin with my ass looking like a garage sale... :D

I'm a sitka guy myself - mostly because they make pants that actually fit. I'm tall and they're the only company with gear worth a s*** that offers tall sizes.

Outside of that, they're the most durable pants I've ever owned as far as hunting gear goes. Yes it's expensive, but you get what you pay for too.

Kuiu backpack - again expensive but worth the extra cash for good gear.. Badlands bino harness.

Find what fits your needs and I don't think you can go wrong with any of the top end gear.

My Dad and I bought all new gear last year for our first trip out West and went with Kuiu. What worked for us was the attack pants (though I did notice some fraying when turkey hunting this year) gaiters, peloton 240 for mid layer, bino harness, and guide jacket was great. What didn't work so well for me was their base layers. As nice as the zip is I find their merino itchy and hate how they don't go full length. Also went with their 7200 packs which I regret and will probably switch to a exo or stone glacier next but I may have fitted it wrong. Also recommend sizing up as others have said. Not a hard and fast rule this was just my experience and I'm sure others might feel differently. Don't be afraid to mix brands I wish I would have. And finally don't care what other guys at the trailhead say also long as your wearing what you like and more importantly that it works.

Like others have said, don't be afraid to mix and match and don't be focused on getting it all at once. If you haven't hunted elk before in September, then go out and get a few pieces that you think you need and then learn from the experience. Then you will know what you want going forward and you can get better deals in the post hunt seasons. As for personal preference, nothing beats the Kuiu zip off base layers as someone else mentioned. I have no idea why more companies aren't doing this. Also the hip vents are very nice and don't exist in Sitka, but Skre has them if you are looking for another company.

My favorite Sitka piece that I owned was the kelvin light hoody. Just very well designed and made. They just did their homework on how it fits and functions for hunting, easy to draw a bow, just right hood coverage with out restricting your view, one simple draw cord to chinch it down, almost wind proof, very water resistant. I run cold and found it shy of my warmth needs is the only reason I sold it.

Favorite Kuiu piece is any pant because of the hip vents. I found the vents on Skre pants to be equally good. Speaking of Skre pants the hard scrabble did me very well last September in northern Colorado. Compared to kuiu attack pants it’s a toss up. I think Kuiu and Skre both need a pant in between their hot weather and mid season pants without taking away any features or adding stuff driving up cost. That being said maybe Sitka fills that void?, I don’t have hardly any experience in their pants.

Anyone who says their choice is the best is an opinion you can ignore. Fanboys are label guys...hunters use what works. And in that regard you may wanna swing both ways.

It’s been discussed a lot. Just want to see what everyone thinks. Will be buying gear soon. Will be September in southern Colorado if that means anything. Want to know differences between durability, function, and overall function.

Thanks in advance!

What is a good layering system for early September in southern Colorado? Was really liking the mountain pants or timberline pants. Not sure on upper layers and I have some first lite bases that I like
