Hell most ultralight tents are going 12 and 15d ripstop. MSR is using a 10d on the fly light. Heir twin sister shelter (the same concept as the summit refuge) uses a 30d fabric, most likely because the tarp is built for the application. My point being, Kuiu markets ultralight and is going to error on the side of light vs strong. Their 20D fabric isn’t all that burly, but it is stronger than you see many of the 3 season tent market using. I would agree based on my experience that a 20d PU Coated fabric isn’t going to hold a candle to what Kifaru or Hilleberg uses. But I don’t think it was the intent of Kuiu to come out with a shelter to market against kifaru or hilleberg strength - their storm star tent maybe so, but again, they sacrifice strength for factory seam taping.
I’ve asked them why, and they always respond to keep up with production demand and sell a ready to use product.
They’ve had that fabric out in shelters for a while now, so I don’t think I’d call it a careless product launch, I’d say they are sticking with what they know, for better or for worse.
I think it’s awesome that they at least try, gives options to choose from made by a hunting company.
