I'm about to order a few items from KUIU.

Super Down Hooded Puffy
Ultra Merino 210 Hoodie
Merino Zip Off Bottoms

Does merino shrink? One of the few good things about my older synthetics is that none of them shrink.

I'm 5' 8" 160lbs, will a large in the hoodie and puffy be too big? I don't like my tops as short as most guys, I hate having my wrists or stomach exposed in cold weather when I put my arms straight up. I also like to wear a thermal and a hoodie under my puffy's when it's cold cold.

Should I go with the 145g weight or 210g weight in the merinos?

I have a XL ultra merino 145 and had an ultra 210 XL. A large would be too big for you I would think as my XL is a little baggier than I'd like on my 5'10" 210lb frame.

The tops both have a good amount of length to them so that's a plus.

No experience with their puffy or peloton

i'm 5 10 200lbs. i have a large spindrift (the old style puffy). its almost too small for me but works good as a mid layer. i would recommend a large for you as well. I also have a large 210 merino top, fits good as a next to skin layer or with just a t shirt under it. i'm a little to fat to put a layer under it. i don't have the merino bottoms but i feel the 210 would be a little too bulky for my liking. i would go with the 145 bottoms.

The large will be a perfect fit for the puffy. I went medium in the guide jacket and it fits but is pretty snug with layers underneath. The large is more comfortable to wear something underneath it

Large SD should be a great fit the Merino might be a little more difficult. It will shrink and the issue I had was the sleeves were longer than I prefer for the ratio to shirt size. I am 6' 195 and went with a L so a M might be better on merino.

with the few KUIU items I have I see a definite tendency to trend from small to realy small for size - At 5'11"/210 I'm hardly your size - I purchased both the 145 and 210 zip offs in XL and sent the 210 back but that said I thought the 145 was marginal in my office but on the mountain it was perfect so I may have slightly misjudged the 210 (thought they were ridiculously too small) and may give 'em another chance - My general feeling on KUIU is that up to XL and if a person is not "tiny" a little big will be an asset rather than a liability - My biggest complaint with KUIU is that you have to take the chance on sizing then send it back if it's not right and KUIU is not exactly a "customer service standout" although they claim to be (they might really be trying) I was not at all impressed with the attitude at the SCI convention ("the other guys", on the other hand, were EXTREMELY friendly and falling all over themselves to be helpful) There is no doubt that KUIU makes some crazy lightweight stuff and the quality seems to be there, once you get the piece that fits correctly - I just got a Kenai Hoody, KUIU told me to order a Large and "yep" had to send it back for an XL

I think you're about right for size on the SD. I'm 6'1 190 and bought a large SD and I can't get much on underneath it and have to actually take my wristwatch off to comfortably get it over my forearm. The large merino zip tees fit me great, so you may want to go with a medium. I don't quite get some of their sizing, tried the 210 zip off bottoms and the fit was horrible. The waist was way too big and couldn't get the bottoms over my calves.

Know this...the puffy is not really warm. I sat for two hours in the daytime (high 50s) wearing one before I began shivering. Unless you are on the move, you may want a heavier synthetic instead. Hours of still hunting or glassing is very hard when you're cold.

No crap, I'm sitting out on a creek in a t-shirt and it is only 63*. A fleece should keep a guy warm in the 50's.

How is a heavier jacket with less efficient insulation going to be a better option?

I'm roughly your size/build (5'8" 165 lbs.) and have quite a bit of the Kuiu apparel including a hooded SD jacket. The jacket is XL, that I picked up used, off ebay, for a really good price. I figured that I would take the chance and if it was way big on me I'd just sell it and get my money back. It probably is a little big, but not so much that it looks big. It's just big enough to put several extra tops on underneath. I also have a medium SD pullover zip T and it is a little tight, so the large would probably fit perfectly. Oh, and by the way, I live in southcentral AK and this is the only jacket I've worn for the last two winters. Although the last two winter have been exceptionally warm, I've still managed to survive (quite comfortably I might add) in temps just a tad bit cooler than the high 50's.

I'm 5'8/160lbs. Everything I have in Kuiu is medium and fits perfect for me. If you want to layer a bunch under the SD maybe try a large, I can fit a hoody under my medium and it's fine but I could see a guy ordering up a size for that purpose. The SD is very warm for its weight. I don't think I'd like it any warmer/bulkier.

I'm 6', 175lbs. I have Nuyarn 145, 210 Merino in Medium. Fit is great. 210 is slightly larger/longer for layering considerations considering it's not a next to skin layer. I got my SD jacket in L, just because I wanted a little room. For your size, you might be swimming in a Large SD. Thats my $0.02.

Awesome. All good insight from you guys, 18 replies by the time I logged back in that's great. I only own one piece of KUIU now, but I like their pricing and their commitment to performance, at least from the research I've done. I'm excited to try out those items this summer. I know Sitka is killer as well, and the few items I've tried from them have been great.

I tried on that traverse zip t hoodie, may have been the most comfortable thing I have ever warn. But $149 for a super thin fleece essentially, is just out of my budget.
