Hey guys looking for some input on these two items for early archery mule deer. Mostly high country stuff (backpacking) mixed with some lower sage country type hunts (car camping). Mostly August and early September.

Currently I’ve been running a kuiu merino 145 zip t and a peloton 200 hoodie. I’ve been using a merino gaiter to block the sun on my ears and neck. However, this year I would like to run a hoodie to block the sun instead. I wear the Peloton 200 Hoodie to block the sun some, but it gets too hot when hiking.

It looks like the Sitka is a very thin polyester material and the kuiu is a lightweight fleece. My options look like this:

1: Sitka Core Light Hoodie + Kuiu Peloton 200 Hoodie
2: Kuiu Merino 145 + Kuiu Peloton 97 Hoodie

I’ll also be running a Kuiu Superdown Ultra Hoodie and Kryptek Poseidon Rain Jacket as a rain/wind blocker. It looks like the Kuiu Peloton 97 would shave ~6-7 ounces off my pack weight over the 200 that I’m currently using.

Thanks for the input. I’m interested to hear everyone’s thoughts and experiences.

I have both the Peloton 97 and the Sitka Core Lightweight. The are both "light" but both very different IMO. You've got it right in that the Peloton is just a super lightweight fleece and the Sitka is a thin synthetic. I prefer the Sitka in warm temps and use it like you do, mostly to keep the sun off. I use the Peloton as more of a super lightweight insulation piece. I find myself taking the Sitka 100% of the time early season.

Not familiar with the Kuiu hoody but I'm a big fan of the core lightweight. I've used it in hot (early AZ mule deer - think late August) conditions and found that it did great for blocking the sun and was - for me - cooler than a short-sleeved merino top. It also has not gotten any stink, the Polygene seems to work (again for me).

i have the core lightweight hoodie and ran the kuiu 145 half zip and 125 long sleeve for a while. i like the core lightweight hoodie a lot more and theres better merino for hot weather like the fl aerowool blends. the core lw hoody is lighter, dries a lot quicker, and more comfortable in the heat. i havent used either for longer than a couple days in a row but the odor difference is minimal. i used to have to use a boonie and and neck gaiter for sunprotection but not anymore with the hoodie i just use my normal trucker hat and the hood keeps the sun off. the facemask is an added bonus for archery close encounters.

I like the 97 better than kuiu wool for early season. I bought it for a mid layer but it performed better as a nts. Temperatures ranged 38-70 mostly so using as a mid for something like 50-80 it would work. The 97 has the same micro fleece as the 200 but since it’s so thin and a loose density material any warmth it may hold is easily lost with a slight breeze.

It’s extremely comfortable, soft, great stretch. Best thumb hole design imo. Not extremely durable but no worse than a merino.

As much as I want to use the Sitka core lwh their shirts just don’t fit me right. It appears to be more for concealment and sun blocking than warmth and wicking. The core has a great hood and face mask and definitely felt durable enough for what anyone could expect from a shirt.

I’ve thought about wearing a 97 under the core to have the best of both worlds. Still would need a mid layer though.

i have both...

i like the sitka core longsleeve under the 97

or better yet

just get the sitka apex hoodie

Thanks for the help guys. I think I’ll buy the Sitka core light this year and maybe purchase the Peloton 97 in the future for the weight savings

I have no experience with the Kuiu. I bought the Core Lightweight Hoody for this year's early season archery elk hunt. Temps normally range from 70-85+ where I hunt. This year the temps were much cooler, running from low to mid 60's up to around low 70's. For my bases, I switched between a First Lite Wick t-shirt, a First Lite Wick Quarter Zip long sleeve and the Core Lightweight. My goal was to put each garment to the test against one another. I will preface that each garment performed amazingly and I love all 3. That being said, My overall favorite for the hot days was the Sitka. All 3 shirts breathed incredibly well but the Sitka was on a different level. It has a grid style brushed interior but at the same time is lighter than anything I've ever worn. The hoody felt even lighter than the short sleeve aerowool. Truth be told, the way the shirt is constructed (Sitka), it almost channels the surrounding air through the fabric and along your arms and torso, creating a pseudo-breeze feeling. It's hard to imagine but I actually felt cooler with it on than shirtless. I believe that is because the way the fabric moves moisture so effectively away from your skin it actually has a sort of venturi-cooling effect. When building up a sweat and being soaked in the back, I could air out by being stationary and be completely dry within 15 minutes. The hood was another amazing feature in my opinion. The ability to keep the sun off your neck and face was a massive advantage to me. I never really thought about it but even when hiking in the sun, the hood not only kept my neck from being exposed but it actually helped cool me off. It is sort of reverse thinking but that is what it felt like for me. Once the temps began to drop during the day, I started wearing the Wick qz more. The Sitka will be finding a permanent spot in my layering kit for early season from here on out. Simply the best hot weather top there is IMO. Layering wise, I wore it next to skin with a Sawtooth over that and a Corrugate jacket over that for the cool days while stationary. Oh and for a bonus, the shirt never stank! I didn't have to wash it the entire season and it still smelled new. That's a win in my book.

Honestly, I think I'm going crazy still, but the Peloton 97 is way warmer and more windproof than the Peloton 240 in my opinion.

I just posted this in the other thread but here's my thoughts.

This year I dropped my system to the 125 Ultra Merino Tee, Peloton 97, Guide Vest, and a puffy if necessary. I tend to run cold but that combo was enough for me from 20's through the 80's.

Peloton 97 works great as a sun shirt as well.

I'm not a big sweater though, if you are then maybe the fleece isn't a good idea.
