I read a few reviews, and of course the descriptions on Kryptek's website, but I can't really figure out the difference between the Vellus and Njord. Does anyone know from experience?

Other than the Vellus being waterproof and having a hood, both are supposed to be warm down to single digits.

I can only tell you about Vellus. That is my go to hunting coat for everything until it gets to 0 then I go to my Cabela's wooltimate jacket till -15 then go to Cabelas Whitetail 050.

What layers are you wearing under the Vellus for it to be effective down to 0 as you mentioned?

And are you stationary or actively moving?

Context is I'm looking for a jacket/pants that can get me from 50°F down to about 5°F, while sitting stationary in either a treestand or a natural ground blind. The Vellus looked nice, especially being waterproof and windproof.

I wouldn't say the Vellus is that great for moving around a whole ton. The windproof layer almost acts like a vapor barrier sandwiched in the fleece and insulation layer. That being said it is awesome for keeping you warm, traps that warm air in and comfortable as a pair of sweats. I bought a set this year and wore it all year never getting cold and the most I wore underneath was a light merino base layer. This was only down to freezing or a little below, never got anywhere in some of the temps listed above.

Sounds like what I'm looking for.

I wear the heavy sitka 1/4 zipup shirt and silk undershirt. And if you need to, you can unzip the pit vents. When I am walking uphill I have my jacket unzipped and if I get chilled while sitting I zip it up which doesn't happen very often.

I have the vellus pants and jacket. Use em strictly for tree stand hunting. I’d probably use them for standing on drives and a little walking. No strenuous work.

I wear two heavyweight poly pro layers under the vellus and that keeps me plenty warm in the cold weather.

Sweet - thanks for the info.

Sounds like I need to pick up the Vellus.

Do you have any other Kryptek gear that you enjoy?

I’ve worn my Vellus set down into the low teens with a merino and a puffy layer (both) underneath. It’s great stuff.
Minor nit picking - it’s not absolutely silent, the barrier and the base fabric ‘squeak’ softly when in a bind like taking hand in/out of a pocket. The jacket chest pocket zipper will be behind your bino / carrier strap.
Still my go-to for anything cold weather other than driving rain or straight up the mountain mobile hunting.

Vellus was my first kryptek purchase and I love it for bow hunting as well as the rifle stand if I plan on being immobile or can change before going mobile.

I then bought the alaios pants. Love em for all around pants when I don’t plan on doing much sitting.

Then bought the tora pants and bora jacket for a trip west and as far as breathability and mobility is concerned, holly crap, I don’t think I sweated once during the trip. I didn’t get to test either in the elements. I got em both on big discount during a black ovis sale.

I also bought a dalibor jacket cause the price was right. . It’s freakin sweet too. If I didn’t have the bora jacket, the dalibor jacket would be my go-to. I don’t know when I’d wear one over the other yet, well, the bora for high exertion and more hiking. but I just really like em both.

Kryptek is great stuff that can be found for great prices if you keep your eyes peeled and are patient.

What kind of jacket is the dalibor? Their website basically calls it a lightweight jacket built for being active. But what does that meannnmnn lol.

Is it just a shell? Have a fleece liner? Mesh liner? Like a wind breaker? Like a hoodie? Etc.

The Vellus is fantastic. I use it for tree stand hunting or very slow still hunting here in Wisconsin. Lite poly undershirt and a lite fleece shirt is all I wear underneath.

Dalibor is more like the softshell type material most companies are using. Know what I mean? Heavier and tougher material than a hoodie. Definitely not a windbreaker. No liner. It seems like a tougher fabric than the bora, it’s a durable feeling jacket without being heavy. . If I didn’t buy the bora, the dalibor would be my jacket for every early season hunt, and mobile and semi - mobile hunt from early season through late season......for everything except sitting in stand all day. Layered properly, it could be used for everything. It still might be that for me. I have yet to see which does better in the cold, less mobile activities, with layers. Does that clarify at all?

Dalibor, as well as the other kryptek gear just fits. And seems tough

My only beef with the vellus is it does pick up stickers. But, I bought the vellus mainly for the warmth, softness, and fleece for quiet tree stand hunting, and that is what it is.

Yup, thanks for clarifying. All my gear is Kuiu... their website is fantastic, their product descriptions are great and they have lots of comparison videos/posts explaining the types of scenarios you would be wearing their gear in.

I've been struggling to find that with Kryptek.

Without going into a bunch of detail that no one will care about, this whole venture started by me needing to look for ONE piece of gear to cover a specific temperature range. Now I'm looking at swapping all my gear to Kryptek :P

Isn't that how it always goes?

Haha, my Kryptek deep dive started because I needed a new gun bag and CamoFire had a killer deal on a Kryptek bag....... the rest was history.

Also look at the cadog pant. It has a slicker outer material. I have both of them and as far as temp I can't tell a difference. I also wear KUIU guides but they are used for temps above 20.

Are you stationary or active hunting while wearing the Kuiu Guides above 20?

I am ADD. I can glass for a couple hours at a time, but then I have to see what is over the next ridge. Some days it is a 6 mile day and other days are 10 to 12 miles.

The Vellus is a fleece exterior where as the Njord is a tricot thats much smoother but still very quiet.
The pit zips on the Njord jacket are a real bonus that i dont think the Vellus has.
The downside to the Njord line is weight.
They are definitely not for backpack hunts, but great otherwise.
