I just got a Kyptek merino 1/4 zip off of CamoFire, and it smells to high heaven when wet! I took it out on a hike this week, and couldn't stand myself! Anybody have this issue? It is the 2012 stuff that I got ( even though I just got it ) I found a couple threads discussing the problem on other forums, and some said they got exchanges. I have washed it, and it doesn't seem to help?? Any thoughts?

Yep, you'll think your sewer backed up or something when you take some merinos out of the washer.

I haven't experienced the high funk factor with First Lite as much as I have with other brands when wet.

My Kuiu 185 smells like stinky wet sheep when it's wet. Kind of afraid to open the new stuff I just received. Thinking I might sell it/return it and try the First Lite stuff

I can say my FL doesn't stink much at all. Even wore it 7 days straight on one hunt last fall and hardly noticeable. I was alone though, so you may have thought different.
Stink or not, I can tell you going from poly and other wool products that the good merino is 90% less in the stink department.

My Kuiu and FL merinos don't stink even when wet. I even left my FL in the washer for a day wet by accident and it didn't stink.

Thanks guys. My other Merino was First Lite and I never had any odor issues, but it sounds like it is just the way it is.

My experience has been that the first few times NEW merino gets wet, it stinks like a wet sheep or something similar (never smelled a wet sheep)... After that, I haven't noticed any smell at all.

Agree with Nick Wash it in really hot sanitary cycle and youll find it removes a lot of the smell.

Thanks. Sounds like part of my issue is that the first time out of the package I was hiking in the rain and sweating profusely. That could explain the difference. I anticipate better results after several washings etc... and that is probably why I had a better experience before. ( Never absolutely soaked it on my first time out )

For sure, that situation will smell with merino. Wash it a couple times and that smell will slowly go away. My first hike in new merino always smells like "wet dog" whether it is First Lite, KUIU or Kryptek.

All merino smells like wet sheep when wet.

Yep. And I think that's a huge improvement over the stink of sweaty synthetics any day. Couple that with the quick drying properties, and the fact that it's still warm when it's wet and I can live with smelling like a wet sheep :)

I've never had my icebreaker or Ibex smell like wet sheep. C4E and Kuiu I've had smell like a wet sheep though. I'm with Becca though....sheep smell over synthetic rot anyday of the week. I gave up on synthetic base layers eons ago..

I own all of them and they all smell funny when I'm sweating or caught in a rain storm:)

I will say that the Camo versions from each company will tend to smell a bit more at first when compared to non camo.

Aron,
Any idea why the camo would make them smell more? I figure the smell of sheep can only help in the mountains when chasing sheep. :)
