Kifaru - NEW INSULATION!!! - Sleeping Bags

Ryan I thought you wanted really world experience? IMO the original bags were temp correct. I doubt the majority thought the temp was off but the new version should be extra warm. If kifaru is admitting their bags are off and I had purchased a new one earlier this year I wouldn't be very happy.

Do you think anyone was listening anymore? Sounded like people arguing over something half have never used. I deleted mine as well. But that thread was going to shit fast!!

I've slept in a slik a lot and so has my son. I also use the center zip during bear season. IME they are close to their temp rating. That said I prefer to sleep in a WM badger, there is just something about down.

You clearly are catering to the military market. Some non-military hunting market questions?

Weight?
Normal pack size?
Compressible size?
Length/width/girth?

This is interesting. I thought that you guys had always used the Climashield APEX even in the old ones. I even wondered which weights of this stuff you guys used in the old bags when I was looking at making my own APEX quilt. Figured it had to be the 6.0 + some lighter layer as well.

So what were you using?

Why do you think we are clearly catering to the military market? We are offering a synthetic highly durable sleeping bag to both markets. What makes one more catered then the other? Just interested in your feedback.

All specs on the bags can be found here. http://store.kifaru.net/slick-bag-p73.aspx

We were using Climashield Combat. Its just a slightly different type of insulation from Climashield. That is what we were running since the bags started.

I think probably cuz you said you were? Lot of confusing representation on this promotion thread

Never said we cater only to the military. Simply said that we make one bag to cover both areas.

Thats how I interpreted it.

I've grown to really like the military grade equipment when I'm 8 hours away from the trailhead. It might be a little overbuilt and a couple ounces heavier, but it's reliable and the performance is unconditional. The military has 1 million to spend on testing the best insulation for a sleeping bag. No other outdoor company has access to that kind of design budget or the results thereof. We as civilian outdoorsman get to benefit from this thanks to Kifaru.

Those of us that sleep cold come up short with every bag we use. 15-20 off is about where I'm at with the few bags I've used as well. Normal sleepers would probably use a 20* in the same conditions cold sleepers would use a 0*. So with the new insulation I think the benefit is that I might be able to use a 20 instead of a 0, which lightens my load a little. It also may not make a difference at all for me as sleeping cold is more of a physiological issue.

BTW, where are the 20* slick bags? I don't see the option on the site.

Anyone else wonder why the hell our military is wasting $1 million testing sleeping bag insulation when there are plenty of great civilian options?

That said, looks like a good upgrade from Kifaru. Good wet weather option.

HAHA. Being military I know why they did this one. Usually I think most of that military testing is BS but for this one I get it. All SOCOM and Marine Recon units are going to completely switch over their GEN IV - ECWCS system to this new insulation. It will be a mix of Polartec and Apex. They just wanted to make sure before spending hundreds of million is was the one they wanted.

I just bought a 0 degree about a month ago in preparation for some fall hunts and now you come out with a new and improved bag!

Me too :) The new ones are heavier, so I'm happy with my new older center zip!

Looking forward to some real world testing in 2 days, 20 hours, 27 minutes

I wouldn't use the budget of the military as a baseline for anything. The army spent 5 billion on universal camouflage and look how that worked out.

I should have my new 0 bag for my late Aug hunt.
I will do a review.

Low Temps normally only get into the high 20's

I will be using it again for a late season WY elk hunt where the temps could be anywhere
