kifaru guide lid as a gift for a day pack?

Have decided to give the guide lid to some family members who are more day hikers than hunter/packers. Good choice? I know there are better day packs for the money most likely.

For those that use as a day pack, do you like?

Btw, don' have one for myself yet:)

Thanks.

Of course a Kifaru Guide Lid would make an excellent gift!

But.....it's a Tough call brother. Depends on their "day pack" usage.

I pulled my guide lid off the pack and used it to carry bladders down to the creek for refilling. Had 2 100oz bladders, a nalgene, and a 16oz bottle crammed in there. Didn't fit great but enough that I didn't have to carry all 4 individually or have to take my whole pack down for a water run. That said...the weight of it would suck riding on my back all day like that. It worked but not super comfortable and wouldn't want to run around like that all day.

I've pulled it off and used it as a quick scouting pack with a jacket, possibles pouch, nalgene, etc (very small light load) and it worked perfectly. It's a great "grab and go" item.

My son has also worn it around town (park, zoo, museum, etc) when we travel and it works great for a smallish load. (I run an urban zippy and he wanted to carry a Kifaru "day pack").

So....with those examples of my usage I would say it's a great super light weight day pack for light load when you know you're not gonna need to carry heavy items all day long. But once you start creeping up in weight you might want to think about a different style day pack.

Hope that helps.

I've been looking at adding a GL to my Timberline 2. For use in conjunction with a pack, I think it is a great option. For a stand-alone day pack I'd probably look elsewhere. It is a lid that is useful when you don't want to carry the whole pack. As a dedicated minimalist day pack? Ehhhh not sure. Just my 2 cents.

I use the MR daypack lid as a tree stand pack and range bag. Works great as long as you are not packing for miles and heavy weight. The guide lide would work but I'd go with the E&E and the Omni frame sheet before the guide lid if it was anything more then just a walk into a tree stand where you need some extra gear etc.

These are great tools for little utility type use but not as hunting day packs, IMO.

There are better day pack options for the money IMO. The value is in the utility, not as a stand-alone day pack.

Id definetly do the e&e for a gift. I'd have a hard time not finding a use for mine. I use it almost daily, have been for a few years now and it still looks almost new. Awsome little pack worth the price. And would make a great gift. I already have one, but I would buy another, or 3 or 4 cause they just have so many uses.

I'll echo what's been said here...the guide lid works great as a make-shift short duration and/or light load bag. But there are much better options for stand alones. I really like the antero over the zippy's, but that's much more expensive for a gift :)
