Kids rifle...again.

At a crossroads and trying to decide the best route forward. I have a 9 year old and a 6 year old. "Youth" stocks are too long for them. They both have been shooting a chassis rimfire ruger 10/22 with great success. Both kids are ready for centerfire .223. Caliber is not up for debate. They will be using 223, and barrel length will be 16" or less and suppressed.

Adjustable stock is a must. Ideally this 223 would suffice as a trainer for me and a hunting/trainer rifle for both kids.
Son (6) has a shorter LOP than daughter (9).

Option 1:
Im a Tikka fan, so a large part of me wants to go tikka 223 @ 16" placed in a chassis with a buffer tube and a carbine stock where LOP can easily be changed. One qualm I have with this setup is that it will inevitably be "heavy", chassis always are. Great for shooting, not great for a small child that will be required to manipulate and handle the rifle on their own.

Option 2:
SBR Tikka 223. I really like this option paired with a small can to replicate how a rifle should feel for them (size appropriate). What are the downsides here? Not worried about MV or Trajectory, i handload and can make it work.

Option 3:
Weight conscious AR-15 16" build. Seems I could save some significant weight over the Tikka going this route. I dislike that they will not learn bolt manipulation, but that could also be taught at a later date I suppose. Ive build several AR's but never being weight conscious. Please feel free to make recommendations for lightweight parts.

Option 4:
AR-15 pistol. Building along the same lines as above. Not sure legalities of big game hunting in other states should I go this route.

For anyone that has had extensive experience with their own children or taking others through the paces please chime in! My children have been shooting rimfire since they were 2 years old. I realize im starting them on centerfire sooner than most. I find alot of the info is geared towards 12 year old kids. Im a firm believer in correct tool for the job. Id like the make this gun fit THEM first and foremost! It HAS to have a short LOP that can be changed in seconds between the 2 kids.

I went through this with my girlfriend, she’s needed the short lop but I admittedly also wanted to a .223 for tmks I could also use. The easy button for me was the Ruger Ranch and been very pleased. The lop adjustments are easy, cerakote and short threaded barrel were hard to beat for the price. It’s something I foresee being my kids first rifle when the time comes and I can still build my tikka .

I forgot to add triggers are available now too.

Option #1

Chassis grows with them. Also easily changed to another tikka 6cm in the future when they start hammering steel at 800 yards….

I started my youngest off with sig cross in 6.5cm. Last year she got a tikka 223 24” trainer and 18” 6cm and that cross is a 22cm now that my youngest 9 year old and I shoot

How big in a difference in lop? You could possibly get away with using the same lop but putting an adjustable cheek riser on something to adjust it to them.

I’m going through the same scenario now with my daughter. I picked up a Tikka compact 223 and had it chopped/threaded at 16” but the stock is still a bit long for her (she’ll be 5 this summer but tall for her age). I started reading the ULUL thread and ended up picking up a Solo 300 upper receiver and had a rifle length gas system barrel chopped at the gas port and threaded for a 12.6” barrel length. With a carbine buffer tube and SB pistol brace I can get the LOP short enough for proper eye relief.

This is something I know nothing about

I went through this with my kids and ultimately built up my kids an SBR AR.. I enjoyed it but it was LOUD, even suppressed. They are also generally heavier and a bit bulkier than a bolt action build. Kids just didn’t love shooting it.

Get a Howa Mini in 22 ARC, cut it to 18”, and put it in an Elf Owl chassis for them to adjust LOP and grow with over time. That or a 16” Tikka 223 in something like a XLR Element 4.0 and TR-2 Butt Stock. This is what I did and my kids enjoy shooting it MUCH more than the SBR AR..

The RokStok Lite Youth that was announced would be ideal but I’d be shocked if we saw it available in 2026 with their track record on timelines.

Tikkas with cut OEM stocks make good kiddo LOP options for cheap.

IMO compact stock won’t work till about 8YO (4.5’ or so).

I have a 7 YO whose 4’2” and his LOP is about 12”.

223 / ARC calibers are best. Mine was shooting a 6C for hunting and practicing with it was too much. 223 for practice has been great.

You will need a raised comb but those are easy and cheap too.

Chassis IMO don’t really work till about 12.5-13” LOP (again 8-10 YO range).
